I purchased this lens to use on my Nikon 810. I have other lenses that are Nikon and 1 sigma . They all are very smooth when I put them on but this Nikon lens is not so smooth. It goes on but seems a little ruff. Is this normal because most of the lens is plastic.

If it is a plastic mount, they can be purchased reasonably and are quite easy to replace. I've done several on used Nikon DX lenses, bought very cheap (as damaged/broken) and the plastic mounts are only a few dollars on Ebay. The replacement mounts while not made by Nikon seem to hold up just as well (months of normal use). If metal and rough surface or mating "ears", you could try removing and polishing the mating surfaces. Some folks really abuse the mounts, and the plastic one's will distort and break off. Hope this is helpful.

One thought is to go back to the store with your camera, explain the problem, and ask if you can try out several other 50mm f1.8 lenses. If it is an outlier, and it seems like a problem maybe the store will exchange it for you.

My daughter had the same problem. Her lens mount was made of a plastic material and was broken after a small bump. She took her camera to a camera repair shop and they replaced it with a metal one. Works much better now.

The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens body is plastic but the lens mount is metal, not plastic.

Which version of the 50 are you using. Is it the D version? Are you locking the focus ring?

I will get that error using the 50mm f1.8D, if the focus ring is not locked at max f-stop (minium aperture opening).

Yes this is the lens. Yes again focus ring is locked at 22. Can't figure it out.

I think that there are 2 different discussions going on here. The OP is referencing the Nikon 50mm f1.8G lens not the 50mm f1.8D lens. The two are very different beasts. The 50mm f1.8G lens is mostly a plastic barrel but it does have metal mount. The lens is made in China (I'm not a big fan of Nikon lenses made in China) and does have a bit of resistance when mounting it. Ken Rockwell also mentions this in his review. Mine is the same. My lens also has a bit of a focus issue that I am able to correct on my D850 body. Believe that it is a back focus issue that that is somewhere around +5. The worst that I have ever seen with a Nikon lens. Once corrected the lens is quite sharp and auto focuses quite fast. Hope this helps.

Mine is the same way on my d3400 and D90. A little stiff going on. Does not seem to pose any problems.
