I purchased this lens to use on my Nikon 810. I have other lenses that are Nikon and 1 sigma . They all are very smooth when I put them on but this Nikon lens is not so smooth. It goes on but seems a little ruff. Is this normal because most of the lens is plastic.

As far as I know, all of Nikon's 50mm lenses have a metal lens mount. Is it a new lens or used? I wonder if the lens mount got damaged by rough handling. I've seen people mount lenses on cameras as if it's some kind of industrial tool. The mount is a precision machined piece. I've had some lenses that are a little tighter than others when mounting them but they weren't rough going on. You might want to return/exchange it or send it to Nikon for repair.

"not so smooth" is a vague term. If it feels as if something is wrong - too much effort required - then something is probably wrong. Don't risk ruining your camera. Find someone else with a 50mm and compare. If you can find a camera store, bring the lens and see what they think. Compare it to a new lens. It's worth a drive to make sure the lens is okay.

Even my old "el cheep-o" Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E lenses have mounted smoothly to any of my Nikons. We need more info.

It should mount smoothly if you are not doing anything wrong. If new return it.

I believe the correct term is SNUG.

I've had some lenses that are tighter when mounting than others. It might be OK. There are three leaf springs inside the camera's mount that exert pressure against the locking lugs of the lens mount.

Is this a new or used lens?

I have this same lens and know exactly what you are referring to. I think it's because of the plastic mount. The only one of my Nikon lenses that does this. It was relatively inexpensive and that's probably why it's so snug. There are more expensive lenses out there with metal mounts but, I'm not upgrading for the amount of times that I use it.

Do any of the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lenses have a plastic lens mount?

I presume that you have carefully checked the mount for debris or burrs. Any time I have taken one of my own lenses to try on a new camera body, the first thing that the sales person does is inspect my lens mount very carefully. The second thing he always does is clean it very carefully, even though I've just done so.

This is also the first thing I do any time I buy a new lens, even if it is new out of the box.

If the mount is plastic, I'd expect it to be tight in order to compensate for the wear that is going to occur over time.

Sorry to have mis-led you. My mount is, in fact, metal. The plastic is the part that actually holds the glass (lens) in to the housing. I'm guessing it's snug because it very rarely gets used.

I have the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 G, if this is the lens you are referring to, mine feels normal when attaching to the camera. Not too snug, not too hard to attach.

Mine has a metal mount. The rest of the body is a very light plastic material. So light it feels like that the lens is not real, like some toy.
