The D5300 is one of the grey market cameras that Nikon allows their "authorized service center" to repair.

Thanks so much for the info! I hope I never need a repair but that makes me feel a little better. There was so much I didn't know before buying a camera, I should have just read these boards for months before buying. I find UHH very interesting and informative, even when people are disagreeing.

Most people disagree because half of them have idea what they are talking about! LOL
They just pass on their internet misinformation.

Seems like that happens on every social site/forum I've ever visited. People will be people. It can be entertaining or very maddening. But I really do appreciate this site! I have learned so much in just a couple months, and I love seeing all the beautiful photos.

Again, thanks for replying to my question.

I just send it to Nikon in Canada and they repair any Nikon camera at cost no matter where I purchased it.

Yes, the wording is confusing. Apparently, you bought your camera through Nikon USA, so it can get regular service: free during the warranty period, and at a cost after warranty. Nikon products do not transfer their warranties to new owners.

Nikon and its ridiculous warranty policy again!!! Why do Nikon owners put up with this protectionist garbage? I will never buy a Nikon and I think anybody who does is a total id.....

No! I won't say it - I'll just shake my head in wonder.

I asked Nikon and they said if I buy a camera in Japan and bring it back to the US. Nikon will service it. It's not gray.

I have an interesting response from Nikon regarding USA and Grey marked cameras. It looks like Nikon implies that my Nikon USA D850 camera a grey market one after I sell it. Has anyone run into this before?
I have the warranty but the buyer won't be the original owner.

Your support question has been answered by one of our team members.
Question details:
Warranty transferable? What is Nikon's definition of Grey Market? Will authorized Nikon repair centers fix a D850 purchased outside the US?

Response from Alexander V.
Warranties are NOT transferable.

The Nikon definition of 'Gray Market' is clearly defined on our web site. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-store/gray-market.page Just like the support site says- If the product does not include a Nikon Warranty, the product is probably Gray Market. However, If you are the original owner with a proof of purchase from an authorized Nikon reseller, you are entitled to Nikon repair at set prices. To see the repair costs, go to https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-and-repair.page and select 'Schedule a Repair'.

Nikon service centers probably will not repair a gray market D850. If you find a service center that will repair the D850, you will be subject to the service center's prices, schedule and possibly limited parts. If you have a D850 with a valid Nikon warranty, or you are the verifiable original owner of an out of warranty product, you should first contact the Nikon service center in the country where you purchased the product. Feel free to contact Nikon support to find a service center in the country where the D850 was originally purchased.

Nikon highly recommends you purchase all equipment through authorized Nikon resellers. Purchasing used equipment, trades, and equipment from non-authorized resellers is very risky and not recommended.
I have an interesting response from Nikon regardin... (show quote)

NikonUSA does not offer warranty transfer. Most Nikon users know that. They also don't work on or support gray market Nikon cameras. They do a wonderful job on the Nikon cameras purchased from authorized NikonUSA dealers. This is not anything new. NikonUSA and Nikon are separate entities. You might find a camera repair person within the USA but he/she cannot obtain parts for a gray market camer but can get parts for a non-warranty-second-owner repair job. NikonUSA is just protecting their business. If you have a problem, I suggest you write or email Nikon Japan.

Did you ask if they will repair your imported camera if you sell it to someone else? That was the question raised by the OP.

Apparently, I am one of the few here who has read the question, the link provided and understands the English language.

Enough already. Game, Set, Match!

Import or Gray they will not repair regardless how you get it. A USA model or one I bought from Japan and sell it Nikon will repair but the warranty won't transfer.

So what you are saying is that if I purchased a used Nikon camera body, originally sold by a USA authorized Nikon distributor, from, say MPB or KEH, and it’s serial number indicated it was a β€œUSA” model, Nikon will not repair this for me even for a charge and deem it grey market? Where did you get this information?
