Seems the owner of the service station, bought the plane as a war surplus item after the war. The plane had never seen combat. He went back east to pick it up then started flying it back to his station. Two things to note, he was not an experienced pilot and he wrote hot checks for the fuel to get it home. When he got there he had to run to the bank to cover the checks he had written...lol...I remember reading that some where, I just don't recall where or when... Makes for a great story even if it is or isn't the truth...
