It's definitely a repost but, having been a teacher for 34 years, I love it!

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided their best option in life was to become a teacher?" He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. " To stress his point he said to another guest;

"You're a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?" Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied,

You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I make a C+ feel like the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids wonder.
I make them question I make them criticize.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them write.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math and perfect their final drafts in English.

I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart, and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, pay no attention because they just didn't learn.

Susan paused and then continued.

You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make?

Nice!! My youngest is 19 in college and guess what? She wants to be a teacher. She will do well at it too from what I have seen her do handling kids. So proud of her.

It's definitely a repost but, having been a teache... (show quote)

While serving in the Army, I was blessed to be assigned as an electronics instructor (COBET School, Common Basic Electronics Training, Ft Jackson, SC).

I was clueless as to what teachers felt when they taiught, until I stepped up to the blackboard and taught audio amplifiers to trainees.
When " THEY GOT IT" was the time I got excited, When I passed on the lesson and their eyes lit up, when they were scratching their heads wondering what I was talking about, then their expression changed when they understood the the operation of an amp. I knew I suceeded by the look on their faces and they got more engaged, excited.

Wonderful experience teaching is.

Too bad the school system is what it is these days. Teaching "White Guilt" and equal OUTCOME.
Washinton, Lincoln, Grant, Roosevelt, get a paragraph an Clinton gets chapters in text books.

I have talked to any number of high school graduates that can't balance a check book or find 20 states on a map or 5 continents.

Teaching is truly a worthy endeavor.
But teaching klids everyone "deserves" a trophy "for trying" equates to equal outcome and is destructive to the very issue it is meant to enhance. Self image, self esteem, self respect.
Thanks for your opinion none-the-less.

Take a look around you, Ole Sarge...Colleges certainly are teaching White Guilt to students. University of Minnesota in particular!

Problem is there isn't enough white guilt. The blacks still do it tough with the continued bigotry of the whites, even here in Australia. You don't think you are a racist white? What if your kid brought home a black boyfriend or girlfriend? Be honest now. I know what it's like to be bullied because you aren't one of the 'in group', but at least I was white so I didn't cop too much.

No, Ole Sarge is still right!

The teachers that effect most of our young people are still the elementary and high school teachers that struggle with the brunt of education's responsibilities. They are also the ones who struggle with the multiple burdens of being under-valued, over-worked, and strapped with being the parental figure when none other will stand up.

If colleges are offerring classes in "White Guilt" and the like then they are doing so as "an elective" class and the students don't have to sign up for them.

"First they came for the teachers... then they came for your books." I'd stop worrying so much about people coming for your guns and start worrying more about people trying to come after your educators.
