Hi, I just watched an episode of Art Wolfe's "Travels to the Edge" and he was photographing grizzly bears in Alaska. He rarely tells what gear he is using but tonight he said he was using a 1000mm Canon. Since Canon is one of his sponsors I'm sure it was a Canon but I can't find it listed, and I'd like to know what it costs. Does anyone know about this lens?

As part of its regular lineup, Canon makes an 800mm f/5.6 IS USM at a cost of $13,000+. It also a custom 1200mm f/5.6L EF USM for about $120,000. I am sure that Art Wolfe could easily have a 1000mm lens custom made by Canon. It would cost (get ready for some brilliant deduction) between $13,000 and &120,000. And no, I don't think he is using a 1000mm mirror lens. On the other hand, he could be using a 500mm f/4L IS II USM (a mere $10500 just for the lens) with a custom 2X teleconverter.

You can also get 1200mm with the Canon Powershot SX50HS for less than $500!

Many years ago B&H had a large lens for sale. I think it weighed 30 pounds and the used price was 120,000.00 or something like that. Could it be the same? Bee

Which arm can you do without? Seriously, probably the 500mm and a 2X, but even then we are not talking inexpensive.

The 1200mm was a very limited build with no exact numbers available, but it was well under 100 copies and most went to the government and sports magazines.

I recall reading that they only made 6.

I could be wrong.

I recall reading an article that said only 6 were accounted for. But the black hole of government will obviously not release the number that they have in inventory, likely all painted camo green or desert camo as the case may be.
The B&H sample was the first one to be publicly available for several years.

On my retirement income I couldn't even afford the Tripod for that lens.

You don't need that big a lens to shoot grizzly bears. You just have to get closer :)

The lens to the left is the Canon 800mm F5.6.
The lens to the right is the Sigma 200-500mm F2.8 (the worlds ONLY 500mm F2.8) and it is being used there with the matched 2x teleconverter which make that lens into a 400-1000mm F5.6 lens, for only $26,000 bucks NEW!
