Hi, I just watched an episode of Art Wolfe's "Travels to the Edge" and he was photographing grizzly bears in Alaska. He rarely tells what gear he is using but tonight he said he was using a 1000mm Canon. Since Canon is one of his sponsors I'm sure it was a Canon but I can't find it listed, and I'd like to know what it costs. Does anyone know about this lens?

Probably a limited production model only available to selected pros and extremely difficult to get on the list of those who can even look at one!!

As part of its regular lineup, Canon makes an 800mm f/5.6 IS USM at a cost of $13,000+. It also a custom 1200mm f/5.6L EF USM for about $120,000. I am sure that Art Wolfe could easily have a 1000mm lens custom made by Canon. It would cost (get ready for some brilliant deduction) between $13,000 and &120,000. And no, I don't think he is using a 1000mm mirror lens. On the other hand, he could be using a 500mm f/4L IS II USM (a mere $10500 just for the lens) with a custom 2X teleconverter.

I have to agree with Mogul, Canon has never made a 1000mm focal length lens of any kind. The 1200mm was a very limited build with no exact numbers available, but it was well under 100 copies and most went to the government and sports magazines. It was likely a lens/converter combo of some sort. Maybe even a 600mm F4 on a crop sensor body for 960mm equivalent, that's close to a 1000, but who knows for sure. But most likely the 500mm lens and a 2x converter as this is a favorite combo of his and is in many videos and books. Here is one:

According to Herschel they sold that lens last year and its no longer available.
But if you find one they do have camo Lenscoat covers for them, only $600!!!

Wow, what a bargain! A $600 lens cover for a camera that doesn't exist. Must be a government project.

Hoss, if you make enough to get one with your tax return, why wait for the return at all. But I fully understand that if you have been divorced a dozen times, even Mr. Gates would be depending on his return.

In his blog in 2009, Wolfe states one of the lenses he travels with is the Canon 500 f4, maybe he is using a 2x converter with it.
