What I described in the first post, I can set up and get be shooting images in 5 minutes. It's not complicated but it did take a lot of words due to the OP's inexperience with the concepts and terminology...in a week or two she'll be able to do the same thing.
Another thing to mention; its' not "soul-less" to have good light any time of the day or on any location via lights you bring yourself.

rpavich, your instructions were perfect! Thanks to your taking the time to explain a simple step-by-step process, with suggestions on systematically practicing the same shot set up at the different flash power outputs, I made more progress in a couple of hours this weekend, than in many months of frustrating trial and error.
I appreciate everyone's comments, after all that is the fun and risk of posting questions on a forum. But the credit goes to rpavich for an excellent, easy to understand, lesson on measuring and managing light.
Because of him, I now get it - yay! - and will soon have the portraits to show for his kind efforts (not sure I will post them though lol!). Thank you so much, Bob!
