My grand-daughter is playing high school varsity basketball. I have been using a Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens. This lens is great for close ups etc. but I need a lens that is sharp and allows for a wider FOV. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I would normally recommend you stick with this lens but if you really want to go wider go with your current lens little sister the 24-70 f2.8.

I have used the 24-70 and it is awesome. find a spot on the baseline or under the boards and have some fun!

I know, I may sound like a broken record, but if you want to treat yourself to a 70-200F2.8 or 24-70F2.8, rent it from lens giant. great prices, great service and they have a large selection of lens!

Thank you all for your help. As always great advice and I am renting a lens to see if it solves my problem. Thanks again. Mike

I will try but as user's here know I am a computer illiterate and while for most of you that is an easily accomplished feat for this old man it is akin to flying a jet liner. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike

I recently started shooting my son's basketball games and picked up an 85mm 1.8. It's a great lens for shooting in the gym. And a great all around lens for the money. I alternate between the 85 and my 70-200.

Oops just noticed you were asking about a larger fov after I added my comment. Guess I'm not awake yet.

A Canon 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS will give you the range of reach you need. It does not perform quite so well in low light as the 70-200mm F2.8 IS, but it should be bright enough.

I would disagree. You do not want anything 5.6 on your camera. 3.5 at the low end is pushing hard already. If it is not an f 2.8, get a prime f 1.8 on there.

Canon 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS will cover it all, and do it well.

Again? 28-300 is a wonderful lens when lighting is in abundant supply. Indoor sports is not what this lens is for. Poor lighting means loads of noise from super high ISO because the lens is not made for this. You are probably even using a flash to get low quality photos. A flash is not allowed at most games (if the school is at all competitive) so that makes it even a worse choice. Look at your slam dunk photo for a great example of wrong lens for the shot. At 100% zoom it looks horrible. Your boxing photo is the same and although I did not check what lens you used on that photo I am guessing with the low quality that it was your 28-300 too. You have a great lens but it has limitations and you are recommending a lens to do a job it is not equipped to do.

I've learned that 1.8 or wider is the way to go. I have a 2.8 70-200 and I can pull off the shot with it; but the 1.8 nails it every time.
