Hi cj, im not very sure about settings. I tend to look and adjust through my viewfinder, till it looks right. I think the iso was 200. aperture f5.6
Hope that information is correct. I know I should be learning more about my settings, its just finding the time, as all I want to do is take photo's. :? When you say soft, what incurs them to be soft. :| pip

Great subject and composition on #1 and #3. I frequently have this type exposure and am not sure how to improve it. I'll watch this topic and, hopefully, learn.

Hi Larry, im just not getting a good exposure in this kind of light. I dont know if, because its winter and everything is more or less one colour, which is brown, there's no definition. Nothing seems to stand out. Well maybe we will learn something today

I think a lot of it has to do with the overcast. It diffuses the light so much, you don't have the dramatic lighting of bright sun breaking through the shadow. It mitigates the effect.

What I do is remember the area and when the lighting is more to my liking, try to be there. Sometimes I get the shot the next day or maybe a few months.

Hopefully someone will show a better way.

Cheers Larry, I will have to go out again when the light is similar and try again. The sky was quite blue no cloud and seem to be plenty of light, but very low in the sky. I thought it would have made a nice light against the trees, it was nice to look at with the naked eye, its probably my lack of knowledge of the camera and how to adjust settings. Maybe, this may not be my field in photography, not the right subject. Still got a lot to learn, 3 steps forward 2 steps back

Hi Pip. I played with your first shot a little. I think the way the sky was fooled the camera. You should have shot it a lot brighter, which means you probably would have had to drop the shutter speed or up the ISO to get it right. Would you like to see?

Honest opinion is that the composition in # 3 is pretty good but all suffer from clutteritis.

Interesting compositions. I might up the exposure a bit on a couple of them.

A higher f-stop would bring more into focus. These should use more like f16 because there is detail through a wide range.

At that aperture and ISO your shutter speed will be low. You'll need to use a tripod and remote release to get them sharp.

There is a wide dynamic range. To bring that out you'd need to use something like Nikon's Active D-lighting, HDR, or at least something like Lightroom's shadows adjustments.

You may be using area or matrix metering. Try spot metering on what you want to emphasize. You may want to try several shots where you meter on different brightness things.

The sky is causing the underexposure. It won't affect spot metering. The sky may blow out but that is OK because it isn't your subject.

Here's one with some Lightroom adjustments to show what can be done. The exposure suggestions above would move you in this direction sans the vignette.

There might be some interesting crop opportunities as well. Since only the thumbnail is posted significat cropping would drop the resolutiion too much to fairly illustrate.

Let us know if you like it better or not.

Hi Erv, thats a load better. I also have to agree with jthomas that the photo's are quite cluttered. I think I was really looking at the effect the low sunlight was giving and did not think the shot out. But your post adjustments has improved it a lot. Thanks for your efforts Erv, its appreciated :-D  pip
