I think you mean the iris as the shutter is part of the camera, not the lens...Was the lens dropped or banged up against something?...I like my old manual focus macro lenses, they can take a beating & still work fine...Hope it's not an expensive fix...

Thanks for the advice guys, but I cleaned the contacts and checked it out on two different bodies, Auto focus works just fine, but if I shoot at anything other than f/2.8 there is no capture only an error statement, the shutter is definitely stuck. I was getting very different lighting results in consecutive shots the day before, I thought that it was the flash causing that, now I suspect that it was the shutter's improper function.

No nothing was dropped or banged, guess it is just electronics behaving badly.

Might be worth sending in for an estimate. It might not be as bad as you think.

Maybe moisture? Try wrapping with a dessicant (silica gel) packs and store in a cool dry place for several days and then try again

This statement lead me to the conclusion that you dropped your lens.

If not so, your iris/aperture problem may be easier to repair than I first suspected.

That is your main tool for all your macro. I'd send it in for at least an estimate. You may want to call the "Mother Ship" and they may be able to give you some tips or something. One of my friends, who shoots Nikon had a similar problem, told me he sent his lens in for "calibration" and they fixed the aperture problem while doing the calibration, and cleaning. I don't think the fix cost $100.00.

These really-close-ups are fantastic. I too am sorry for your loss of lens. Now you need itsy-bitsy baby jumping spiders to shoot! Maybe that would work..? till you can replace your lens.

Well, maybe I can limp along with my Sigma lens with a 1.4x Tele-Converter, but I did so enjoy shooting with that 100mm, kinda puts a knot in my shorts, you buy a Canon lens for perceived quality and then it craps out like that. This is the first expensive lens that I have ever lost like this... Not sure that I will have it fixed, maybe someday.
Sorry for your lens. You shoot with your sigma ?????? and 1.4x tele-converter. I'm asking because I have a Nikon 55-300 and 1.4x teleconverter.

Just had this happen to me the other day. My lens was really cold and apparently did not make contact with the camera. Tried other lenses and they worked, tried my cold lens again and it worked. Could have been moisture from the cold.
Might be a little dust or the contacts are a little warped.
Good luck.
