Depends on your application. If all you need is to post to the web, facebook, etc., phone camera is fine. However, if you want to blow it up to hang on the wall, the photo from phone camera may or (may not) have enough pixels for printing depending on the size.

True, i did get a 16 buy 12 printed and the photo held it's own very well, its on my wall and people find it hard to believe it was taken from a phone, i'll post it later im on my phone right now, i need desk top to post it.

Beauuutiful! My husband has an iphone4 that he's used to take some awesome sunsets. But your close ups are really really good. I think what matters is what you see and using whatever tool you have to capture it.

Thank you.

I had a Sony DSC H-1 5.0 megapixel that I used for years and I thought it took stunning photos. I was really, really happy with it and could never find a point and shoot that came close to what I got from the Sony. Then I got my Olympus Evolt E420 and I fell in love all over again. I think like most here, it is what you are going to use the photos for. Personally, I would never go back now that I have the flexibility of the interchangeable lens. I also have an Olympus PEN E PL1 that I adore.

Travis i think maybe you missed my point those photos were taken with a mobile phone.

I like your shots and it is always the user and subject that matter. A 3.2 mpixel image will enlarge to a respectable 11x14, or larger, with the latest generation of printers. I have an 8 mpixel EVO 4G phone with a good lens that will get me about all the enlargement I need. Still, I'm reminded that a grainy 8x10 picture of an exceptional event such as a loaded 747 falling out of the sky is somehow a little more important than a 21 mpixel HDR shot from an EOS 5D MkII of a butterfly sitting on a flower.

Thankyou and yes thats a good statement.

90% photographer - 10% camera; which seems to infuriate some folks with lots of high priced gear and no talent, wonder why? ;-) If you are happy, and you are not trying to sell photos to feed the family (photography is a hobby not a profession) then that is all that matters. If you are 'Eating From Your Camera', ya gotta go with what sells...

90% 10% that was funny, cool, yes i do understand there is no substatue for a quilty outfit esecialy when it's your bread and butter.

Thank you people for the nice things you have said looking forward to learning and growing.
And people the nokia N8 is worth a look for a pocket camera, it has Carl Zeiss glass lens 12MP 7 auto scene modes as well as manual, 4 colour tones, white balance, exposure, ISO, contrast, sharpness all ajustable, a photographers phone.

A good craftsman never blames his tools.

It is really about your understanding of what is a good photograph, tack sharp details, DOF, correct WB for skin tones, noise or sensor density and balance of exposure for shadows and highlights.

Your third photo is spot on... I find it hard to believe that they are from camera phones some times, but I have a fellow photographer friend who prides herself on how well she can do just that. she enters them in camera phone contest, and has won a few...

...and then there's guys like me - too old to stay still which ruins lots of otherwise nice 8 mpixel phone pics. Gotta have something else. You do indeed have a good eye and you and that Canon stuff you let us see should do some good things. It'll be interesting and, I'm sure, worth the wait to see some of it on here.

The camera is directly related to the end use of the image.
If you are going to make 11x14 or larger enlargements then there are different considerations from CD viewing or small prints.
Also you must consider what is your "demand of excellence?"
All of these things are part and parcel of your camera choice.
So my answer to your query is "Yes the camera does matter."
