Wow! Another kind of photo I have no idea how to do... Tripod, some f/setting, a longish exposure, try to time it and pray?
Tripod; absolutely. Set to "Manual", lens wide open, shutter on bulb and used a cable release. Focus set to just shy of infinity with vibration reducer turned off. Opened shutter when the rocket first shot off and kept open until the display fizzled out.
This and a few other good ones were the result of somewhere around 60 individual shots.
Yes it all makes sence. Pretty good subject matter that comes around from time to time. Is is this a time when f/2.8 matters? or will an f/4 sort of lens do the trick?

Thanks Tom. That was with a 85mm lens iso 100 F7.1 and a 3 sec buld shutter time...also using a remote trigger & tripod.
Here's one from my hometown. Canon SX40 bridge camera on a tripod.
