DeepSkyStacker HELP!

Was down in New Mexico (farmington) for Christmas. Took some long exposure (20 sec, with 10 sec pause). Tried stacking them in DeepSkyStacker, and not getting what I expected. I found out I dont have "dark or flat files" just light files. Read the explaination on their site...Still dont get it. If some one could explain it in " simple" terms it would be much appreciated. Thanks
