ok ya,ll, after buying my youngest daughter a d3100 earlier this year, and she loves it. i have decided to jump in, now that the d5100 is almost as low price as the d3100 which one should i get? d3100 or d5100
thanks nikon don i want to keep it around the 500.00 mark, and keep it simple.
The biggest functional difference is the articulated viewing screen on the D5100, a feature I personally like alot. You can tilt it or swivel it so it can be seen from different angles. You can take a low-angle picture from ground-level without having to lay down. Or take a high overhead picture.
If that feature doesn't mean much to you, the D3100 is an excellent choice, or, as Don suggested, the new version is the D3200 is great, but at a higher price.
thanks danilo, i have now gone to search and reading up on d5100. i think the d5100 is it, as my daughter has a 55-300 lens i can borrow. i will have a learning curve, but i will figure it out.

I have a D3100 and it's a great camera. was thinking about stepping up to the D5100, then I put my hands on a D7000 at Best Buy. I guess I need to save for a little while longer yet.
If your choice is between 3100 or 5100, I'd say 5100
I have just given my son my 3100 and bought a 5100. my opinion is that once you have learned to use the 3100, the 5100 is the next step up and after my first day, I am happy with my choice.

Sams has this camera with a 18-55 and a 55-200 lens for 699 right now.
Get the D5100.
You will love it.

I have both and the D5100 is a great camera...love it...can use remote with that one where you cannot with the D3100..check out some of my pix on people photography..most were taken with the D5100...if you like the D3100 you will really like the D5100...happy snappin :)...
I have a D5100 I bought 6 months ago and really like. It has a learning curve but all of them do. I don't find it really difficult to learn and it is a camera I can grow with and have the quality that I want.

Get the same one you bought your daughter. You will have something to keep you close and you can teach each other. I purchased a camera body that was one better then my better half's and I could tell that she was not exactly happy because I 'one up'd' her.
the two are great cameras but the 5100 is a wee bit better
