My son asked if Florida had any poisonous snakes ? I said " I don't know...Why?"

He said " Cause there are two outside the pool gate "

Didn't someone say Florida might have 'Brown Recluse' spiders?

This ain't what I signed up for moving here.

Unfamiliar as to the breed, but the snake posted is non-poisonous. Note the round pupil in the eye and the rounded head. Ven
omous snakes have an eliptical eye(vertical), with a triangular head.

My son said " Just grab the tail, it's not poisonous "

I replied " You didn't come from my loins, that's for sure "

LoL...Grabbing the tail is a good way to get bit. Grab them behind the head. Watch out for them brown recluses. Would rather be bit by a non-poisonous snake then the recluse.

My arms are not nearly long enough to get near enough to a spider to catch it. But then again, a broom might be long enough to say ' HELLO '

I wasn't so sure. It looked vaguely like another snake I'd seen and the eyes looked very similar. I put them side by side and it was spooky how they resembled each other.

The one on the left is Sarge's snake the one of the right is the deadly black mamba.

Luckily, we've been able to identify the one in Sarge's yard, it the non-venomous cousin of the black mamba, it's the

BLACK MAMBO , a harmless snake attracted to warm sunny backyards where there is Raggae music playing in the background.

Sarge.... just switch radio stations and I think you'll be OK.

Looks like a Black Racer, Sarge. Harmless and lots of them in Fl. There is also the Coach-whip that looks similar but is usually cream colored towards the tail end. We also have Indigo snakes (protected). They're similar to the black racer but can be about as big around as a beer can.

The ones that you have to worry about are the Rattlers (a few different types), Cotton Mouth, coral snake and Copperhead.

Just remember, Sarge...YOU moved in on them, not the other way around. You don't listen to reggae music, do you? Didn't think so.

I second the Black Racer, common snake, keeps the rodents down, great to have around. Generally they will scuttle off at the sign of humans.
"Harmless" means non venomous. It dont mean they won't tattoo you if given no choice. ( first bite is the worst, wash it with peroxide, good as new).
Venomous snakes in the US are all PIT VIPERS, save for the Coral snake, related to the cobra.
Pit vipers are easily identified by triangular heads and heat sensitive pits between the eye and nose. very prominate.
Coral snakes look much like some King snakes. If you see a snake with red band next to yellow band, that is a coral snake, VERY venomous, though not very likely to get bitten by one, save for careless handling.
Give a snakle an escape route and they will almost always take it. ( though water moccasin or Cotton mouth, have been noted to charge humans probably to defend nesting grounds or their young).

Not very good pics but the coral snake in this picture is the most recent one of a few that I have seen here at home. It's colors are a little dull because it is about to shed it's skin. The other is a Grey Rat snake.

Hey
Sarge69, a snake is a snake no matter what color or shape of head and eyes, it is still a snake.
