Yes unfortunately most people that are not into photography can't wrap their minds around the idea that decent gear does come into play.....just because you are a photographer doesn't mean you can work magic with any old piece of craptastic lol!

Reminds me of the story of the musician who got the most wonderful sounds from a battered old violin. It's the talent of the artist that is often more important than the quality of the kit!

Funny you should say that....my Iphone takes decent photos lol!

I was just thinking about your definition of the P & S you used and wondering if a good smart phone might have had more technology to work with.

It sounds a little like the ugly sisters in Cinderella; perhaps they were making sure you didn’t appear on the photograph!

Today at work I was approached by a member of our IT dept.
She comes up to me and blurts out "Since your the photographer can you come and take our pictures" They needed head shots for our head office. I laughed and said you are aware that "we photographers are just part of the equation...the gear does come into play as well.
I still took the pictures with the craptastic P & S they gave me to use.
It was a real laugh as this thing was so old and you didn't have much in the way of options to try to make the photo look good.
I told them next time give me some notice and I could at least bring my camera and my flash lol!
And for goodness sake do NOT tell anyone I took those yucky pics!
They all laughed but yet were happy with the poor quality.

Have the company sprout you a new camera and lens of your choice for the next shoot.

Always remember that most people do not have an eye for photos. What you and I might think is lousy, they think is great.

The following three quotes that I cut and pasted from this blog illustrate the problem we are facing in photography today.
People don't understand or appreciate quality photos. They are just happy to see an image. How many times have we heard a wedding photographer not get a job because Uncle Fred has a camera. Newspapers and television station are accepting photos from so-called citizen journalists which are poor quality photos. I mean blurry and/or pixelated. I've seen pictures of people in overly crowded scenes where the individual had to be pointed out. I was in a gelato shop and was looking at a poster of the Grand Canal in Venice. The poster was grainy and slightly out of focus. the owner walks up to me and says,"Isn't that a wonderful photography". She was from Venice and the photo (while technically poor) brought back memories. To here that was more important than the technical aspects.
As photographers we look at all aspects of our art but I believe an average person is looking at a recollection which evokes a memory response. Our family album has some really poor snapshots taken with some of the cheapest cameras but you won't know it when people look at the photos of barely unrecognizable images of our grandparents and they smile and say something about how much they love the photograph.
To us they be poor quality but no necessarily to those viewing.
We should still try to do our best but also understand our standards are not other people's standards.

Here are the quotes from the blog:

Assuming the lens is covered, assuming there is no makeup on the lens, assuming the user doesn't chop off heads, assuming the users finger isn't partially blocking the lens, and assuming the user has some sense of photography, you may be correct. However, you do not have my senior citizen (younger) sister who expects you to clean up her CRAP and make them like they came from my Canon. :-(
