Hopefully it's all ok now.
This was a conspiracy between the two scanners. Their "help, I'm being held prisoner in a scanner factory" message didn't work, and this is what they came up with.
Don't tell me machines are inanimate. I've put up with their antics for 71 years.

I just hope word doesn't spread because I can't store too many scanners here. :D

I had similar experience with my HoodMan card reader.
Worked fine plugged into my HP Windows 7, 64 bit where it normally stays. Wanted to scan a card into my laptop.
When I reconnected the Hoodman it would not work on any of the the available HP USB ports and I got an error message. Worked fine on my laptop and Window XP portable but not the HP. Called Hoodman, they were puzzeled.
Trying to trace it thru the Control panel told me the ports had a problem and were not working. I put in on my agendaq to call the computer peolple.
Maybe a week after the first incidence, all three ports on the HP read the reader fine. Have concluded that there was something wrong in one one of the automatic downloads that was subsequently corrected by another download.

Just imagine what it's like to be a brand new computer rolling off the assembly line. Then some guy installs Windows into your innards. Permanent upset stomach and headache.

Every computer I have owned over the years had a ghost inside that caused different problems. There was never a reason for the troubles that soon straightened out but the ghost was still there. I think it moved from machine to machine over the years and he/she is still around. You must have the same issue.

Maybe you should move to a new house.
You may have a conflict between your operating system and the new equipment. Most new equipment is set up to operate on the latest system versions. Check for compatability. An old operating system will (sometimes) not work with new equipment.

Good idea, but the original scanner had been running on this system for three years.
Is your scanner powered by an external power source other than the USB?
This seems to be a problem with quite a few different devices running USB where the device is powered by the USB. Especially with cheap cables. Especially when the USB power has to move working parts on a scanner.
How old is your computer?

Computer and scanner are about three years old. Power is from the scanners "brick" power supply. The USB was originally connected to a hub (for 3 years), but connecting directly to the computer didn't help. Now it's back on the hub and working fine. :?:
It's electronics. Some problems just defy all explanation. I used to install business telephone systems, which are just computers. Sometimes they would fail and then just start working again for no apparent reason. I just chock it up to gremlins.
Do you still have your receipt for the second scanner? If not, maybe you can still take it back for a refund.
Sounds like you have ghosts in the machine.
That was my shot in the dark. I guess if it's not to late you can return the new scanner. I hate to do returns.
