Here at the UHH we would like a poster to use quote reply so that we know which post we reply to. However, in the other forum the admin there doesn't like that. I think it's kind of strange. Here is his answer to someone asking "When should I quote a post when I reply?"

"The answer is simple: almost never. Usually, folks are replying to the last post in the thread, and your post will go right below that one, and it's obvious to whom you are replying, and to what. If a post you are replying to is a few up the chain, then the "@so-and-so: (blah, blah, blah)" convention is preferred if it's required.

When you are having a conversation with someone, do you normally repeat everything they said before you say something? You don't, do you?

Even if you are replying to something that's several posts back, usually a quote or reference isn't necessary; people are smarter than you might be giving them credit for. About the only time a quote is appropriate is when it's clear that confusion could arise if there weren't some reference to the subject being replied to. In that case, be sure to edit the quoted material down to the very minimum that will illustrate to what you are referring. That shouldn't be more than a few words or at most, a couple of sentences.

Photos should NEVER be quoted. We already saw it.

And while we're here, now might be a good time to take a look at the Tapeheads Rules and Guidelines to make sure that you're up to date on the basics. A lot of folks skip that.

The bottom line is that we ask you to please use your head when it comes to quotation. And with that in mind... happy posting!"

Regarding "right after the post to which one is replying" only works if someone (or more) doesn't post before one hits send.....
Then one's reply is NOT right after the post to which they are replying. Happens a lot.
If I am replying to a particular post, I always use Quote Reply, mainly for the above reason.
If I am replying in general I don't.

I totally agree with not re-posting images in a response.

(You know, on second thought, maybe we are not "smarter than you might be giving them credit for", so the Admin from the other forum wasn't including us.). 😁 πŸ˜‹ πŸ˜‹ πŸ€” 😟

You mean a lone post of "I agree." doesn't provide sufficient information?

(I could have just types "yes." and see where it winds up in the thread.
Heck, I know what I'm talking about!)

I will admit that I am occasionally lazy and use reply instead of quote when I reply within a short time of the post to which I'm replying.

But occasionally someone jumps in ahead of me. When that happens, I can go to the post to which I replied, click on 'quote reply' and then when I get the window into which to post (which has the quote in it) and I just press command-a then command-c to select all and copy. I then go back to my post, click on 'edit' and go to the top of the post and press command-v, which pastes the quote into my post. Then update will make my post compliant with UHH standards.

OTOH, I (like StanMac) am not familiar with 'the other forum', so I don't use that pragma.

PS: Frequently I (like others) am not replying to the last post, but possibly a post several pages back from the point at which my post will be placed. Sometimes I even read all the posts before posting a reply.

The moderator/manager of that other forum is long-winded, that's for sure

I suspect UHH has longer discussion topics, and more veering off-track than TapeHeads does, though I didn't examine the site to confirm.

What annoys me is people who use quote reply all the time, whether on a simple photo-share topic with hardly any words in the opening, to much longer opening posts, to the ones with embedded photos from other sites that re-posts the photos within a reply.

Does anyone remember before "quote reply" got the truncated feature? If you wrote 1000 words and someone quote-replied you, the entire original posting would be visible. I felt bad for phone users

Yup! Often I took to much time to type my post.

Not using Quote Reply only allows continuity if one can guarantee one's post will be the next subsequent post.
Otherwise it will appear that the reply was to the post immediately preceding one's post.
Or, in general....
