A great encounter! It is always a thrill to see them, but I hate that they have mange. I wonder if that had anything to do with why they were darting them, probably not. I also did not understand keeping all the pull outs blocked for days after they were all gone…..

The pullouts were still closed 5 days after the kill. I thought the darting was being done in order to collar them.

Fine job! Likely 8 Mile Pack, as you said! Lupine and Rescue Creek Packs were also around at this time last year in Gardiner Canyon area.

We plan on hiking the washed out road through the canyon next trip. There's talk about re-building it with a couple new bridges.

Yes that was some of it, we talked to a Yellowstone Forever lady who was very interesting. She told us all sorts of stuff about wolves. They will also take a whisker from the animals that will tell them things like what they have been eating! How I don’t know. Blood samples and that sort of things for testing. That is why I wondered if they could or would do anything for the mange…. I don’t know how many they darted. Anyway, it was dumb to me to keep the pullouts closed. If the moose showed back up there was nowhere to park.

I think they like most animals in the Wild, they are just shedding their winter coats, not mange.

There were two wolves on a distant hill, and one approached to within 140 yards of me when he was entering a stand of willows. There was apparently an elk carcass hidden in the willows. The second wolf eventually disappeared over the hillside due to traffic and human commotions. There is no way to explain some people's behavior. If you look closely, you can see the wolf's coat is in poor condition. Apparently this wolf, and very likely the rest of the pack have mange. I believe these wolves are from Eight Mile Pack, but I could be wrong. I hope you enjoy.
