Hi guys,
My wife and I are heading to Whistler on the 18th December for my daughters wedding on the 28th
It will be the first white Christmas for us ( have been told it will be the hottest Christmas for years here in Aust.) so I am wondering what precautions I should be taking re moisture etc to my Canon 5D Mk111 with 35-105 l series attached
I have a Digi Pro Holster for the camera whilst out and about and a Lowepro Protrek400 for all the other gear
(100 -400 l series) extra battery plus grip and AA cells
Stopping in Hawai on way back
Cheers

Hi guys, br My wife and I are heading to Whistler ... (show quote)

Welcome to Canada, Bob! I haven't heard if Whistler is open for skiing yet (we are not skiers ourselves), but if it isn't it will be soon. Although there has been snow in the village, I don't think there's any accumulation there yet.
As to your camera, have you considered getting a camera rain-coat or rain-sleeve? Sold by Op/Tech USA and very inexpensive, something like $10 for a package of two.
Maybe the weatherman will be nice and only send snow overnight, and keep it nice and clear in the daytime.... Yeah, dream on, Esther, this is BC!
Just be sure your camera has time to adjust to the ambient temperature before you start shooting - don't hide it under your parka where it's warm and expect to get good pictures in -12 degree C weather.
How are you travelling from Vancouver Airport (assuming that's where you come in) to Whistler? If you're renting a car, make sure you stop at Shannon Falls (about 55 km north of Vancouver, 2 km south of Squamish, and is adjacent to the highway. One heck of a photo-op!
About 20 km north of Whistler is Nairn Falls, equally spectacular but in a different way - much lower but you can really see the might of the water.
OK, so much for my propaganda, just make sure you have plenty of storage for your photos, there is so much to see and photograph around that area that your camera shouldn't get much time for rest.
Enjoy your holiday there!

Condensation & Cold are your two biggest enemies. Let your camera and lens get cold, and keep it that way until done(avoiding condensation). When done, warm up in a plastic bag. Batteries hate the cold. Keep an extra(or two)in a warm pocket till needed.

Here is the other post (I did 2 together)
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-73928-1.html

The cameras would have been a Nikon D700 or a D3X, dependent of which lens I have on that camera that particular day. I am quite familiar with Squamish but not Whistler. Oh yes, the falls pic is made from 3 stacked images for a vertical panorama.

EsterP is correct, there are a lot of things to see in this area....you do have to drive around. Driving yes, if unfamiliar with mountain driving, if the person ahead of you swerves, be prepared to do the same. Occasionally rocks tumble unto the highway and you don't want to hit these. The road from the airport to Whistler is well marked (due to the recent Winter Olympics). It is a very simple route, leave the airport and head straight north. Coming back is just as simple,BUT, be aware of rush hour traffic and could take quite a while. Better to be at the airport early then miss your Hawaii flight.

The colder the ambient temperature, the less the moisture content, so there won't be a problem outside with moisture. To add to the advise concerning a plastic bag, place the camera and lens in an appropriate plastic bag, evacuate all the air, and seal completely, while still outside. Then, of course, allow it to reach room temperature before opening.

You will love the area . Visited there in Sept.2011 and really enjoyed Whistler and the sites around it. On the way to Whistler ,on Rt. 99,Sea to sky highway be sure stop ay Brandywine Falls. Just about 200 yard walk from parking lot. North of Whistler drive to Joffre Lake . It is really pretty and the road very scenic.Good luck. I posted a photo of Brandywine falls.

Re: Shooting in Whistler ... If you are planning on hitting the alpine you should know that the temperatures between the village and the alpine can vary by as much as 20-30 degrees Celsius. While it may hover around 0 degrees in the village, temps can drop to -20 and -30 very quickly higher up.

Depending on conditions, it can get very damp around the village under cloud cover. Definitely do what you can to keep moisture out of your gear at lower elevations. If there is a lot of mist (which there often is) you can get damp just walking around the village.

I would consider shooting in the alpine first where it is colder and less damp. This will minimize the risk of freeze up should you get a little moisture in the works.

I had an old Fugifilm P&S years back that froze on me and pretty much roasted the camera for the day.
