Filled up my gas tank at Casey's today. When I was viewing my bank account info a while ago I saw that Casey's charged me $1.00 for using my debit card. I found out through a google search that Casey's does indeed add a $1.00 surcharge to cover the cost of doing a balance check on my account. Seems to me they ought to give customers the option to accept or decline that fee before pumping the gas. Any thoughts??

They should let customers know somehow.

One restaurant we get takeout from has a sign at the counter stating x% surcharge for credit cards.
(many places are starting that now that the card fee they pay is NO LONGER A DEDUCTIBLE BUSINESS EXPENSE.)

Check your bank account again. That fee has probably fallen off once they have received payment from your account. These fees usually are temporary charges and actually aren’t drawn permanently from your account.

Hmmmm . . . as far as I'm aware, credit card processing fees ARE a deductible business expense for businesses.

How can it be? If they received a payment of $100 and have to pay $3 fee they only receive $97.

Most, (not all) charge 10 cents more a gallon here in NJ at the pumps. Some of the local stores here in my town have a credit/debit card charge but let you know up front. One pizza joint down the road has a $15 minimum for one using a card which another store owner told me is illegal.

They used to be...
I've had a few different Ma&Pa businesses explain that it is no longer the case. Removed in 2023?
Maybe the larger businesses are simply going to eat the cost? (or raise the price...)

I never use my credit or debit for gas. I'ts usually 4-6 cents higher. I always get gas when I'm already out doing chores, so I shop around. I one place is say $3.11 and another is $3.15 of course I'll get the$3.11. I also don't use ATM's that charge. I know there are other hidden fees involving credit/debit transactions but I avoid the one's I can. Call me cheap but how else will I be able to get that new lens.

At those price differences, saving about $.65 a fill-up every month or so for me would take a bit to get a new lens.

I haven't run into any gas station that charges for using my credit card but using my credit card I have the cash back so it's cheaper for me to use the credit card.

The gas company credit card I use gives me a 10 cent discount/gallon using their card at most of their stations. And I use their gas if possible due to Techron they have in their gas. I won’t use a debit card; not as secure.

In our area of Colorado, an upcharge for using a credit card is the exception rather than the norm and the stations who do are for the most part “known.”

Some stations here in Central CA consider a debit card the same as cash and you get the cash price when you use the debit card. when you use the debit card they will ask if this is a credit or debit card, that is how they know to give the cash price.
