Permission to use a photo

This question is for folks more knowledgable than I. A fellow hogger displayed a beautifully lit sunflower a day or two ago. I thought it was outstanding and decided to use it for my desktop. I PM'd the Uhh'r to tell them how much I enjoyed the photo and that I was using it on my desktop. Well, this raised a legitimate question that I didn't have the answer to. Maybe someone can help out. They wanted to know "if it was common practice of individuals on this platform to use someone's work for their personal use (like my desktop) or for other purposes without first asking permission".

Are you requesting a show of hands from those who currently borrow them surreptitiously?

If a person is uneasy or upset to think that their online photos are being used by someone else (in whatever way), they probably shouldn't post them online.

I have too many of my own to care about using someone else's; however, if I were to download for inspiration or ideas, or to use on my personal computer desktop, I likely wouldn't bother to tell a stranger. If a UHH buddy, I would tell them.

I wouldn't know. Perhaps you can do a survey? I personally would never use others' photographs

If someone posts a photo on the internet it becomes public domain, that's been understood since the internet was created

I sometimes use other's pictures as backgrounds or components in a composite but never before asking and receiving permission.

I almost always ask, but am getting old now and sometimes I forget to message the photographer right away then I have to hunt up who took it and am not always successful. My purpose is to only study them or admire them and learn about how to be a better photographer. Then I delete most of them. I share them many times with a very old lady (90’s+) who is shut in and disabled with memory losses. She has a viewer on her table that the pictures will pop up on and they are the highlight of her day! They really give her happiness and a touch of excitement….hope that this sets well with ever.

That's because people "made" it that way!!

Posting on the internet does NOT negate or relinquish one's copyright to an image.
I simply makes it available to people who don't give a crap about the creator's rights............
Their desire to have/use it is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT!
But, since enough people do it it is acceptable.... NOT!

What rights have they viloated using it as a screen saver? Copyright covers taking a photo and using it for some sort of profit without permission. That's is not a screen saver. If one is truely hyper, then put a subtle copyright through the center of the photo where it is most difficult to remove and no one will use it.

If someone wants to make a screen saver of one of my pictures, be my guest. I take that as a compliment not some egregious violation of the meaning of life.

That's not the point....
A copyright is a copyright! Regardless of what may be done with it. It is the photographer's property, exclusively, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Watermarks can be removed.

I have no problem with someone using a photo of mine as a screen saver either. I have been asked by someone they could copy the photo to make a painting. Very honorable of them. I said yes. A forum on Facebook asked if they could post one of my images on their FB page, I said yes. (And yes, it is a complement!)
It's called respect for the photographer. Something seemingly less common nowadays.
I would be displeased if I arbitrarily found one of my shots on the net. Especially without accreditation or having requested permission to do so.
But I won't pursue it.

As a textbook author, I can assure you that if you use that photo for any reason other than your personal use, e.g. as a desktop image, especially if there is money involved, then you need to get permission. However, someone who posts photos on social media accepts the fact that those images will be used in ways, and by people, that they may not know about, and probably don’t care about.

Personally, I would never, ever use another's photo without permission simply because it is unethical.
