That's what I have been using since ProX3. Just got my X5 upgrade and it cannot get any easier managing and editing Raw+JPeg. You can't go wrong with this, especially with the prices many websites are offering.

Lightroom will work with Layers but you will need a plugin for that. See OnOne Products. http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/perfect-layers/

Do you have experience with using it?

I couldn't find the price for it alone but it appears as though the price for the add-in will be relatively high compared to getting Elements 11 for $50.[/quote

I have the full suite of Onone plugins except this one. Yes it is a bit pricey and you CAN do layers in Elements for alot less money.[/quote]

We can do Layers, Masks and Presets in GIMP which is free!

You can try most programs for 30 days before you by any. I use PSE10 every day then if I need something else I have PS5. Portrail Profession 9 for fast jobs, and Green Screen Wizard. Get the 30 day deals then then buy the one that works for you, we can tell you this and that but its what works for YOU. You can get lightroom for 30 if that what you think, I have it and ever use it. Just have fun with any program you get, GOOD LUCK.

Just bought Elements 11 at Sam's for $50.00. Love it. Great for RAW and JPEG.

I find lightroom more intuitive from the photographer point of view. Elements more aimed at a graphic artist. Corel Paintshop Pro X5 (currently on sale) is a lot like Elements but a bit more intuitive from a photographer's view-point.

Whatever post processing software you choose, you are doing yourself a disservice working with jpgs in post process. With RAW files, the software has a lot more data with which to work. JPGs are the result of the camera working with the RAW data and throwing most of it away (it is not saved with the jpg file). You have a much greater chance of recovering blown highlights and shadow data from a RAW file as well as more to work with for restoring accurate color.

I know that but I don't like pp but I always shoot in jpg+raw even if I don't process raw. Now it's time to move up because sometimes exposure is not spot on and I shoot much inside Churches so I think some kimd of pp could be useful. I have never used Photoshop necause I don't like heavily processing-changing my photos so maybe something like Lightroom should be the right tool for me.

I am not very proficient with any of the PP software...but a few years ago had Elements, then went to Photoshop and now have added Lightroom.
Lightroom does almost everything I need except remove spots and a few more detailed things.
I too use JPEG and it works wonderful.

Why buy?

Picasa - free

Ifanview - free

Gimp - free

Of course, if you must buy - Photoshop elements 11

Most people haven't used all of the various processing software recommended here, but are naturally quick to recommend that with which THEY are most familiar. (myself included) Cost notwithstanding, compare the features in total of each. I'll put my chips on Lightroom with no reservations.

I believe the speed has nothing to do with the software, its your computor. I had the same issue with elements, but was great once the computor was sorted. I use paintshop and i think its a great tool. Software is really an individual thing. What one person might like, the next won't, so i suggest you talk to as many people as you can, and if possible, try some to see what works for you.

Lightroom will help you catalog your jpeg and RAW images and also do the post processing...........it can work in harmony with Elements or Photoshop.

I recommend Lightroom

Agree: I'm using Ltr4 and PCS6

Excellent combination.

I also agree. LR can do most anything and you can go to PS for finer detail work.

I've scanned and digitalized a bunch of old prints both B&W and color. Also 40 year old slides. Elements has been a great help in fixing blemishes, scratches and bringing out faded colors. It all depends on what you want to do. I've thought about getting LR but haven't convinced myself I really need it at this time. I guess it's just what you want to do will project your needs. Elements will work on both jpeg & RAW. Enjoy your quest.
