Great photos. The Cessna Bobcat was "Sky King's" plane (early '60's TV show for those of you younger than Social Security age). Beechcraft made a similar radial twin engine plane. One such plane was parked where my father & Uncle kept a Cessna 172 and that plane was referred to as the "Bamboo Bomber." On the Beechcraft you could clearly see the fuselage was made of fabric-coated wooden stringers giving it that nickname whereas the Cessna's has smooth sides because it was made of aluminum sheeting.

Thanks for the enlightenment and correction. I obviously applied the nickname to the other similar aircraft.

My first foray into plane ownership involved a Cessna 172. It was a joint ownership situation ( 3 of us ) that didn't survive the conflict of use issue. It was not too long ago that I sold my last plane....a beautifully restored 1946 Piper J-3.

This is what I came up with for aircraft used by Sky King:

Two twin-engine Cessna airplanes were used by King during the course of the TV series. The first was a Cessna T-50 and in later episodes a Cessna 310B was used till the series's end. The 310's make and model type number was prominently displayed during the closing titles.

Was the Cessna Bobcat one of these? I well remember watching and loving the Sky King series with niece and nephew, Penny and Dick. Great program as many were back then.

I can't give you a definitive answer to you question, Dennis. The Cessna Bobcat was released in 1939. I surmise that Sky King's Cessnas were an iteration of the original Bobcat but that were improved and updated by the time the TV series came along. I was glued to the TV when Sky King was on.

Interesting aircraft, Tom, and nice shooting.

Thanks a lot, John.

I hope you have a great family Christmas. I guess your photo-buddy granddaughter in France will miss this one.

Another excellent and interesting post, Tom. They have a stationary exhibit of the STOL at the Lakeland Air Museum in Florida among many other indoor and outdoor displays.

These are very interesting planes. I really like the little guy in images 2 and 3. It has a very interesting shape.

I’m not a pilot but if I was that VTOL would be off limits for me! I bet the transition to vertical for landing was a tricky trick! Nice shots!

Nice photos! I had a friend who owned a Cessna UC 78 (Civilian version) like that, and I've got some time in it 60 years ago!

Thanks.

The Lakeland Air Museum is worth a visit. I've done that on a number of occasions when I was there for the Sun'n'Fun spectacle. In fact, all of the shots in this post were taken while at that airshow.

Thanks for commenting, Kathy. I agree with you.... " interesting " is a very apt description.

I'm with you, Stan. I can't imagine even trying to pull that stunt off. The difficulty of doing it must surely have been a dominant factor in cancelling the program.

Just reading that last bit..." 60 years ago " causes me to reflect on my own situation as well as that of this forum. What's going to happen when all of us old codgers take our last ride across the landscape ? I don't see a whole lot of younger candidates ready to fill the void.

I'm sorry for interjecting a somber train of thought.
