I recently upgraded DXO Photolab to version 7.1; reviewed a youtube tutorial video and discovered an amazing (overlooked) feature of this powerful post processing program. It doesn’t require downloading to make edit changes….it makes edit changes directly to the SD card images, saves edited changes directly to a newly created/separate .dxo file that can be (subsequently) uploaded to Lightroom or other pp-file management programs as either a raw or jpeg file for further editing or storage.
I might be the last UHH user to recognize this DXO feature and how the program works…but I think making direct edits on the SD card is great! And that's OK...my workflow is changing to utilize this (new) capability. Ok…just mentioning something I didn’t know, but thought it was worth it.

LOL. Sounds like an excellent way to lose your images. Editing directly on the card? For what, to then format and lose? Why create (add) this unnecessary risk? Who is so time-pressed (aka lazy) to copy their images off their card before editing?

An SD card acts like just another portable storage unit when I plug it into my Macbook Air (via a small dock). I can open the raw files from the folder on the card that the camera created, edit them on my computer and save as psd, jpg or other, right back onto the SD card.

Would I ever do that? Not on purpose, no

I donno' know...but the ability to edit the the image on the on the SD card and save it as a separate .dxo file is new and working for me. Saving edits directly on the the SD (as a new image/file) is new to me. I thought was a good application...that I hadn't utilized

I can't imagine modifying any image on any card without backing up. My workflow includes backing up all images on the card, separate folders for RAW and JPG. My working folder is PP (Post Processing) final photos are moved to folder with image name and sig (signature). I tag final images with subject:birds, family, macro, event name.

I never erase the SD card until all images are backed up in at least two ways.

Clarification...there is no risk...it's the way this software performs. Edits are saved in a new .dxo file on the SD card...if this wasn't clear. The original image file is still on the card. (My-oh-my....I didn't think this post processing procedure would receive such criticism from Paul CHG_CANON the self appointed "Content Police"
It's just pp work outside the beloved Lightroom.

Ron, even if this workflow is not over writing the original file and hence it is protected....anytime you have your computer writing to the memory card you run a much higher risk of corrupting the entire card.

Most folks employ a workflow that copies the images from card to computer and performs all edits there. Then use the camera to reformat the card so it is ready for next use.

Hi,Orphoto...please try a free demo of t5,his DXO software if still available on-line. The program does edit and save the (as .DXO) images to the SD card.....before import. I really like this feature/capability and I hope my comments are clear.

Like Paul, I can't understand the advantage of editing an image on the SD card.

Very smart man. I lost several hundred images by deleting them from the card before backing them up......very expensive lesson.
