I was recently diagnosed via biopsy with basal cell skin cancer between my nose and my camera eye (left). I had an MRI yesterday and will get the result (probably) on Tuesday when I see the dermatologist who will do Mohs surgery, tentatively scheduled for early next month. If the worst scenario occurs, how will I continue taking pictures? I tried to look through my right eye as an experiment and it just seemed too weird.

Dear Garry;

Follow MJ Perini's advice ,that's the correct way to go ! With todays Mohs surgery you will be fine & in no time back to taking beautiful pictures like you have posted through the years which I enjoy greatly ! Please know that you are in our prayers also. Happy holidays to you & yours.

I've been doing photography close to 50 yrs, always using my right eye. 3 years ago I had to change to my left eye. I shoot birds mostly. It took time to get used to it, ( took about 3 months )but I did it and you will too. Just keep shooting. Good luck.

Had this surgery a couple of times. Relax, should be no problem. Hope it goes well.

First of all: all the best for your upcoming surgery and recovery. I am left-eye-dominant and looked through the viewfinder with my left eye forever. Eventually I learned that this meant that I was covering a lot of my camera's buttons with the right side of my face, so I switched to my right eye. Took me a few shootings of reminding myself not to use the left eye, but then using the right eye became 2nd nature.

I'm left-eyed dominant and until today after reading your post, didn't realize that I had a handicap! I shoot left-handed and all of my rifles, shotguns, and pistols are designed for fight-handed folks, but I've adapted to them. Have never really had a problem with cameras and am easing into mirrorless with a Nikon Z-50. Did have a minor problem in the Army with the M-1 the rapid fire exercise, but qualified as a marksman.

A basal cell carcinoma is the least concerning form of skin cancer, assuming that really is your diagnosis. Mohs surgery should take care of it, and the skin will grow in to fill the area removed. Given time to heal, you should find the effects on your photography to be minimal. I’ve had a number of basal cell carcinomas removed via Mohs surgery with little impact.

I am naturally left-eyed, and cameras seem to be designed for the right eye. On the Nikon mirrorless I turn off the touch screens, but the Z50 has touch controls for zoom which stay on even after turning the screen off, and I am constantly bumping the zoom with my nose. Not a problem on the Z8 which has real buttons, but I have tried to switch and it's very much like being right handed and trying to throw a ball with your left. "Clumsy" might be one way to describe it...

I guess it is possible to adapt if you have no other choice.

Me too. It would be hard, but certainly not impossible to switch.

You might be better off with a plastic surgeon. Mohs surgery as done by dermatologists involves removing segments of the basal cell and checking the margins under a microscope. Sometimes they wind up with a bigger hole than they know how to close. I had Mohs once, now a plastics guy for me.

Adapt and overcome! You'll figure it out! Good luck with your Mohs. I've had 4.

Changing eyes is not that Difficult. Two years ago I lost sight in my right eye and had to change to my left eye. I adjusted very quickly and now it seems normal to use my left eye.

The digital ZOOM ONLY WORKS IN PLAYBACH MODE AND DOES NOTHING INSTILLS shooting MODE ON MY Z50

I have found left eyed shooting to offer more advantages than right eye shooting. The only thing I have found to be detrimental is sweat and body oils from my cheek and nose ends up on my back screen. I have never had problems with accessing any controls. This is why I really feel for planepics if the MRI would come back with any bad news. I really hope planepics get to continue shooting left eyed.

I’ll let you know. I am having the same surgery on my nose the 30th of November. I have a combination basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas on my right side of my nose and I am right eye dominate.

Sorry for your diagnosis.
My wife has had mohs procedure on her head last year. You will get past this for God is God.
As for your eye focus, the brain has ways to compensate and overcome your vision changes.
Take your time. You can still enjoy your hobby. Give yourself [time] to adjust.
You can do it!
Blessings and Thanksgiving, friend.
