Tha backlighting is gorgeous, as are the rich greens you've captured.

If you try cloning the upper left again, use a soft-edged brush and smaller sections at a time, using lower opacity than full strength. I rarely have good results with skies, but these tips (learned here on UHH) have helped me in the past.

The right side background bushes are blurrier (and leaning in) than the left side, but I haven't attempted a construction such as this, so I don't know the issue. Kathy, I greatly admire your efforts and result!

Thanks, Linda. That's encouraging. I'm going to try the cloning again. The branch of another tree that was leaning into the scene is just too distracting, and there's not a lot to clone from. I don't know why the background bushes are leaning in. I'll look them over also.

See: the red outlined section in the upper right corner in my 'quickie fix'. There's a straight, overly thick 'something' in there that might actually be a branch, but if that's actually a branch, it's an anomaly.

More subtly, though, I did find a sort of pixelated band of blotchy-blue in the sky, more or less toward the top center of your image. Fixed that, too, in my quickie fix.

Some people dismiss minor or seemingly subtle discrepancies and call what they ended up with 'good enuf'. For better or worse, I'm not able to subscribe to that sort of outlook.

Your quickie fix seems to have worked well. The "blothiness" of the sky was actually real, as there was some upper level thin clouds in the sky behind the tree. I did look at that spot upper right that you pointed out. It actually is a branch, believe it or not. The actual top of the tree goes well beyond what I included in the frame. I recall doing something like you did in your "quickie" some years back, but I don't recall how I did the selection. Since I've been using LR almost exclusively, I've really forgotten how to do stuff in PS!.

I did a merge attempt some months back that turned out pretty well. The final image won the artwork of the month award at my art league group and has been accepted into a juried show. So I decided to try again.

There is a great tree in the Arboretum that is way too large to get into one frame. So yesterday I tried a 4-frame merge to get just the center portion of the tree. This is my result. There was some finagling that had to be done in the upper left. Not sure my fix is good enough. Let me know what you think. (These were hand-held, by the way.)

Now if I could just get ALL of the tree into one frame!

As to your last question, have you tried Photoshop's Generative Expand?

I don't think my version has that. Thank you.

If you have Photoshop on your computer (not Photoshop Elements), and if it's via subscription, then you should be able to update for free. Here's how it works: https://shotkit.com/photoshop-ai-generative-expand/

Kathy,
I am afraid the left side of the photo has some major flaws. Look at the sky in the tree's upper margin-some major "funk" here. Also there are some branches in the left hand side that obviously do not belong there.
This would be a really difficult merge with lots of detail to go haywire. I think your camera would have to be on a tripod to make it work.
As presented you could "fix" some of these flaws but that would depend how much time you want to spend on it and also what your judged shows would allow.
It is a beautiful tree though.

Thanks, Baja. All of the branches on the left side are real, as far as I know. I'd have to take a print and stand in front of the tree to make sure. Cani pointed out to me the flaws in the sky, that I may try to fix. That's due to my taking out a branch from a neighboring tree that nearly filled that upper corner. I think I'll just start over on that one. What I really want is to add the left and right sides of the tree in order to show it's hugeness in its entirety. So I may try again. And it hasn't even started to turn yet. When it turns, it is an absolutel marvel.
