Hey y'all

It was suggested I drop in from the fishing forum to check things out here.

Have been active in photography since I was a kid. My Dad's CB handle was "Shutterbug"

Re-discovered it after buying my first digital camera, Nikon D3 series,

Welcome to the forum. There are a few professionals here that still use a D3 professionally.

And thats the quandry I'm in. I heard that Nikon is moving out of DSLR cameras complete and going to latest tech, most of which I dont totally understand nor can afford.

I am in a similar bind. I have used Canon most of my life. (It’s a shame you are a Nikon Kid. We could have been friends)
I went from a AE-1, to 1vHS, to a Rebel 2000 to a 5D Mark II to a 5D Mark IV. It has been a rocky road but I enjoyed the bumps along the way. There are a couple of points I would like to make. The best camera out there is the one you are working with. If it is film, there is nothing wrong with it. In fact film is trying to make a comeback. Digital is still a good medium and it is capable of just anything your imagination will take it. Mirrorless seems to be the new Avenue of expression. But wait cameras love to allow us to express ourselves.
I’m not familiar with the D3 but I have had my sights on a Canon R# for awhile. I haven’t ponied up the money yet but each day another penny goes into the jar.
Since I’m not so eager to argue with the Mrs., I just manage with all the other cameras I have right now. (I take one out and head out the front door waiting for what’s out there.) So before you drop a suitcase full of money for a mirrorless, try renting one. Run it through its paces and then try another.
You won’t be disappointed for two reasons. The first is Welcome To Your Forum. This is a great place to learn and do what we love. The second is even if you rented a camera you don’t like, your not stuck with it for a long time.

Photographically,
Steven Gewirtz

Only issue I have with Canon is that its not Nikon!

As far as keeping the Mrs happy, I usually head out this fishing gear and a camera, that way if fish arent biting, I can always grab some scenery.

Using mirrorless isn't any more complicated than what you're used to. In fact in some ways it's simpler. And if you got an FTZ adaptor you could use most if not all of your glass on a Z camera. By now there are probably a few second hand Z5s or Z6es at very reasonable prices.

Welcome to the forum. Remember that a shift in technology does not render your current equipment useless or invalid. It will still do the job that it's done for you for a long time, just like my AbuMatic 70 still works great.

There are some interesting new options waiting when you get ready. You have to decide if they bring anything worthwhile to the table.

Thanks for checking it out and the compliment!

It's a fun hobby!
(My other hobby is <still> programming, left over from my previous job duties.)

Technology doesnt bother much, was just disappointed to hear that Nikon was dumping their SLR line entirely to move into mirrorless arena.

I hear that. Even though "semi" retired I still work to fish and usually bring camera along.
