I agree with CHG CANON about the D750. If you would like a little more resolution, check out the D800 series (I think there is a D800E also) or D810 that should be able to find in your price range.
For versatility & quality, the D750, 24-120 has been my go-to for years, but may be hard to meet your price-point. For lighter weight, but good quality and versatility, lower price, something like a D5300 with 18-140 would be all you need.
I think a D800e, I have one and its a tough, quality camera.
Thank you for your input!

I have 2 Nikon D-800's that I might part with if this was your choice. Since I purchased the D-850 I never use them any more.

I’ll second the d5500. Have one works well for me.
For a Legacy Budget Solution, you might consider the Nikon D3100 series. Reasonably lightweight & compact. [Crop Sensor]
I like the 3000 series cameras for just a carry camera but if you have any old Nikon lenses you can’t use them on this body.
The new z cameras are a lot lighter but are pricey.

Oh yes I DO!
Yes, they do not automate, but it brings me back a few decades in photography having to adjust the settings.
Just acquired an E series 50 MM F 1.8 which is a nice piece of glass, and much faster than any of my DX ZOOM lenses.
Even my Quantiray [Ritz] from my F4004 kit are usable.
Thank you... I also have the D800...I'm lookingfor a camera for my brother-in-law
