I recently received notice that there are several updates for the R3. I had tried to do that one received prior but didn't know how. I decided to do it, and it actually worked pretty seamlessly. I haven't used the camera since, so I don't know if it got ruined. And I still have 6 updates to do to be totally up to date.
I'm going to be needing my GPS a lot in upcoming days, and I knew there was a map update available. I had done this several times, and although time-consuming, it was pretty simple. So I started in. It stalled at 41% transferred data, and it was taking forever. I left it to grind away overnight, and started in again the next morning when maybe my internet connection would be better. Again, it stopped at about 40%. After several attempts, I started a chat, finally getting to a real person. She was pretty good, and finally determined that the newest map was bigger than my old device could handle. I had two choices, download partial maps or use an SD card. I opted for the SD card, went and bought one, then followed the directions on how to use it. It didn't work. I can't go back to my previous map because it is now corrupted. It won't uninstall, as was suggested to me. So my device is now a piece of expensive worthless plastic! This is why I don't update my cameras! If the same thing were to happen to my camera, I'd be devastated!
I've never updated my camera software...
I looked at the first update that came out, didn't need it.
I never checked after that.
My old GPS couldn't store the new map size in memory, no chip slot.
It still worked, I just couldn't update the maps.
I got a new GPS. I guess after 12+ years it was due?

You can always use your phone as a GPS, Kathy. The WAVE navigation app is very good, and it's always automatically up to date. if your car is new enough, this can also work right through it, and you don't have to do a thing except tell it where you want to go.
To the OP! I think you can simply install the latest update without installing all of them sequentially.

I wanted to simply go back to my old map, as it worked fine. But it had become corrupted and I couldn't uninstall it. So I now have a new Garmin, and I have to learn how to use it by Monday!

I do use my phone's GPS, but it doesn't talk to me like my GPS does, even though I unmute it. So I have to keep looking at it to not miss turns, etc. Annoying. I'm on blue tooth in my truck, but I've never gotten the maps to work on the truck. It wants to use its own GPS, and it's so outdated and also doesn't talk to me unless I keep pushing buttons. Not going to happen on strange, busy city freeways going 70 MPH!

That's what I was hoping, but someone said they weren't accumulative. I'm just worrying about ruining my brand new camera!

I thought all phones talk. I can't shut mine up!!

I think they're supposed to. Mine does sometimes, and it's pretty good at telling me stuff. But usually it doesn't.
I use WAZE too. It's good... tells you when you are coming up on a railroad track or if there is a police car/highway patrol up ahead of if anything is parked on the side of the road ahead. Gives a map but also tells you.

Your camera manufacturer WILL NOT issue a firmware update that does not work with your camera! All R3 cameras made will be compatible with the updates. Check the online instructions... You may not need to install every update — the latest one usually incorporates all prior updates.
GPS companies are notorious for issuing generic map packages that only fit into the storage of the latest hardware. This is why using a smartphone makes better sense. The GPS in a phone uses the map information from the Internet, via either WiFi or Cellular. It is always as up to date as the company who distributes it. And if you don't like one map app, you can install several and try them all!
So you have to pair a stand alone GPS to the the R3, (cable/bluetooth) 7 the software makes it all work?
Disregard! After reading some comments... I get it.

I've not heard of that. One of the things i liked about my phone was warnings of speed traps. That's when it works correctly.

Thanks for your encouraging comments about updates on the R3. But I'll wait until I'm back to do it, I think.
