In the Bay Area (California), male tarantula's that have reached maturity go out looking for a mate at this time of year. The best time to see them is at dusk. Went out last evening and saw 3. The males wander around looking for a female at her burrow. They will mate with as many females as they can but then usually die for various reasons (only rarely killed by a starving female). In contrast, females may live for decades. A picture of one of the males we saw last night is below:
