A friend asked me to check her tire pressure. She thought one of them was low, so she stopped somewhere and added air. I checked the pressures, and the front right was at 97 PSI. She said the pump shut off, so she figured the pressure was correct. Lucky, lucky, lucky.

Don't be standing beside a truck tire when it explodes. Neighbors kid just got killed by the ring off a backhoe tire being changed. He was 15.

That would make quite a boom if it had blown out. She was very lucky.

Split rim truck tires can be lethal when you inflate them. One of my many jobs in college was at a gas station/repair shop. My boss was changing a truck tire on the side of the road when it exploded. It blew him across two lane highway. We didn't have a tire repair cage, so whenever I fixed a truck tire I would drop the car lift across it. That would limit the blast and keep the rim under control.
