97 PSI

A friend asked me to check her tire pressure. She thought one of them was low, so she stopped somewhere and added air. I checked the pressures, and the front right was at 97 PSI. She said the pump shut off, so she figured the pressure was correct. Lucky, lucky, lucky.

I have popped a bicycle tire by overinflation, and that is loud. I can't imagine what a tire would sound like.

Split rim truck tires can be lethal when you inflate them. One of my many jobs in college was at a gas station/repair shop. My boss was changing a truck tire on the side of the road when it exploded. It blew him across two lane highway. We didn't have a tire repair cage, so whenever I fixed a truck tire I would drop the car lift across it. That would limit the blast and keep the rim under control.

Jerry, I’m not sure, but her tire may no longer be serviceable after being over inflated by so much.
As a tractor trailer driver in the US Army back in the day, I can tell you that repairing a flat on a split ring wheel was usually more dangerous than you could imagine. Our safety cages were all distorted from accidents. Air is Explosive!

Jerry: As soon as possible, check the oil level in her car!
Some people should not be driving cars!

That’s a tad high but it’s unlikely that a steel belted radial would explode. I have an in-law who inflates his tires to the max value shown on the sidewalls - 55 psi as I recall for his car. I asked him to check his owner’s manual since the correct psi was probably 30 psi or so but he told me that his father was an engineer and he knew better. The gene didn’t pass. Anyway, handling must be interesting although I used to run relatively high pressures when autocrossing and it was an advantage. He will of course experience rapid center tread wear and poor traction on wet roads.

I was passing a tractor-trailer on I95 one time, when his tire blew. It was LOUD! I almost discovered the colour of adrenaline right then!

I think that he may have mis-remembered what his daddy said. But hey, you can’t convince someone of anything when they know everything.

Me, well I would worry about my daughter the next time she is with him on a hot summer day driving on the interstate.

Go to any tire companies website and it will show you what the tire markings mean.

And here I thought I was the only one to use the car lift as a repair cage. Small world...

The only tire I ever had explode was one an older lady brought in off an ancient wheelbarrow. Scared the crap out of me!
