I used a Domke bag when I was a photographer for the public relations dept. at Georgetown Univ. back in the mid 70's. I liked the way it seemed to conform to my body. I liked it so much, I bought one a couple of years ago. When I slung it over my right shoulder, I couldn't help but to smile.

I still wear my Domke very often, and it gets split time with a no-longer-sold Cabela's Safari vest. Both have ample pockets, and they're nicely ventilated. I noticed on eBay, though, that some of the original Cabela's vests are selling for nearly $100, BIN, though most are in the $25-$75 range.

I use vests. I have a lot of them. Including some Domke vests that are too heavy so I don't use.

Fishing vests have pockets designed for fishing gear; mostly not usable for photography.

Old style photography vests are designed for film photography, which I find less usable for digital photography.

My criteria: light weight, no collar, vertical pockets so stuff won't fall out.

I have settled on Eddie Bauer, and have two (brown, green). Model 0259.

Two pair of vertical pockets on each side, big enough for lenses, filters, etc.

To each their own. I dont find the latest Domke photogs vests to be too heavy at all. In fact they are much lighter weight than many competing photographer vests on the market, yet the Domke vests are still very strong and durable with some pockets other photographer vests dont have.

Use what works for you and be happy, or use no vest at all.

Cheers and best to you all.

I have seen it suggested in other threads on this subject to buy a fishing vest. They do the same thing, have as many pockets, but are less expensive.

It depends on the purpose of the vest. I use a Cotton Vest with camera attachments for two cameras for nature photos. They are sturdy and allow me to keep my arms free. Some even include a tripod holder.

I am an amature astronomer and use a fishing vest to hold eyepieces and accessories. It might also be useful for photo accessories beause the good fishing vests have big pockets and are not expensive.

Durning the 2.5 month, non-summer months in Texas I wear an Orvis hunting vest with large pockets. During the other months, I wear a summer vest. Gihuo Men's Fishing Vest Utility Shooting Safari Travel Vest with Pockets $27. Big pockets up front and the back of both I have my camera raincoat and always a folded trash bag. Caution - if you buy the summer vest, make sure to go 2 sizes larger that you would normally get. Enjoy.

Jim Domke who started these products that pros around the world have used for decades is a longtime friend and former colleague when we were both staff photographers at the Philadelphia Inquirer Newspaper. I helped Jim field test many of his products including the first versions of his camera bags and photo vests.
Tried one one, not for women! And the Domke rep was in the store and commiserated with me.
I still use mine all the time, all around the world. And a little secret, when you are traveling wear this vest and be allowed to take more stuff with you on your flights, beyond any carry-on luggage restrictions on flights. Then just put it in the overhead bins, or beneath your seat.

Cheers and best to you.

Tried on with the Domke rep who was in the store. He agreed that Domke had no solution for women.

One of the main reasons for a vest is to leave your hands free. If that is your purpose, find one which has a couple of pockets deep enough to hold lenses.

I didn't say mine were the latest. But I do find the ones I have (which will definitely be the older ones...like me!) too heavy.

Jim Domke made the first really Good Photo vest..... with pockets made to fit real photographic things like an extra lens or flash.
Virtually everything he made lasts forever. His photographer's jacket is something I still wear in cooler weather.
I traveled around the world with his bags. His bags were true 'working bags' (as opposed to transport bags with lots more padding & bulk) The original ones fit film cameras perfectly , but when cameras got larger , not as well.
It always amazed me how many real working photographers used his bags.

Does anyone use a vest for their photography?

I bought and use a a fisherman's vest that meets my needs. It was less expensive than photography vests.

In order to keep citizens safe, NY has outlawed the sale of bulletproof vests. They don't want mass shooters to have the protection of these vests. Since wearing, buying, or selling one is illegal, a mass shooter wouldn't wear one for fear of breaking the law.

Unfortunately, average citizens can't wear one, either. However, they can take comfort in the knowledge that the shooter who kills them will probably windup dead, too.

Something I've never really understood. Murder is a much more serious crime than the illegal possession of a gun. So why will the enactment of more restrictive gun laws deter murder?

However, a photographers vest would immediately identify you a special photographer.

It might be useful to have something like a JKSafety vest. But to be identifiable as a photographer, it would be nice if there was something like "Professional Photographer" or maybe even just "Photographer" stenciled on the back. A photographer friend of mine was crossing a suspension bridge (in the pedestrian lane). At one point, she leaned over to capture the image of a boat passing under the bridge. Someone spotted her and misunderstood what she was doing. The police, trying to "save" her from taking her life, made a mess of the traffic. A vest identifying her as a photographer might have prevented the incident.

while there are vests that sell as photo vests I just went to Big 5 and bought a fishing vest for a lot less money. Comfortable, light, lots of pockets.. etc
