Hi!
First post here!
I am visiting the Holy Land in July. I am thinking of getting a point and shoot. I presently have a Nikon Z7 for my landscape and inner church photography and D500 for my wildlife. But at 68, I’m thinking I would like to travel light and not worry about my gear.
Any suggestions on a point and shoot camera would be appreciated. I do shoot in raw and understand I need something that can handle low light situations. I am an enthusiast, but my images won’t need to be printed in large format. I am looking at the Coolpix p1000? But am open to other manufacturers. Used purchasing always works best for me.
I am so excited for the trip…heat and all!! Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Nikon Coolpix P1000 at 1416gm is hardly light and is actually as large as many DSLRs. I would suggest a Sony RX10 IV would cover most of your needs with much higher IQ than the tiny sensor Nikons

I found the Sony surprisingly large & heavy compared with my Lumix. Better than a DSLR and a bag full of lenses though. Great images.

Sony RX10 weighs over 2 lbs, (heavier than many APSC DSLR's with lens!) consider lugging that around everywhere. Panasonic Lumix ZS100 or ZS200, around 12 ounces, cost around half.

Take you Z7. Check out a 24-120mm ƒ/4 Z mount lens. It will give you a wide and short telephoto limits and is a small package. A small shoulder holster is all you need. Might consider a lightweight travel tripod also.

Personal Experience in play here.

Some 15 years ago we made a tour of the Holy Land. At that point I only had a point/shoot camera. I was so disappointed with the pictures that I determined to get a "real" camera after that. Got a Canon 60D, upgraded to a 1DX, then a 5DSR. I've also learned a lot about photography from UHH and lots of practice. At 79 I'm not planning to move to mirrorless unless the weight of the DSLR gets to be too much. Which is to say that sometimes a negative experience leads to greater and better things.

The Recommended Sony Camera is a wonderful camera. But you may have to remortgage your home to buy it! Take a look at the Nikon P-950 which will cost you about 1/2 the cost of the Sony and weighs 2.07 lbs to the Sony's 2.0 lbs., a very little weight difference, and will give you a 83x lens range compared to the 25x of the Sony. Do not underestimate lens reach when you are taking what may be a once in a lifetime trip.

Just a thought?!

Good luck with your final choice and have a Great, Safe Trip!

I have the Lumix ZS100. It is a great travel camera.

The Sony Rx 100 Vii or the 10 Iv are good camera options. If you are not planning on printing, then a high end cellphone camera like the Samsung Ultra 22 or 23 or high end Apple phone would be perfect. I have the 22ultra. I use the Lightroom and Samsung cameras which both shoot in Raw. If you use LR, the pictures can automatically be uploaded to the cloud, edited and shared on the go and auto downloaded to your computer upon arriving home. Using an upsize program would allow you to print larger if needed.

Once again, like the Coolpix P1000 the Sony RX10MIV is a pretty good sized camera. I shoot one when I kayak and unless you’re shooting a long lens on the Z7 you’re really not saving in size and weight and losing some IQ. I don’t think you’ll need that zoom range for your trip. My go to camera for travel is my OM-1, but if I didn’t have that I’d use my Z7 with the 24-200 lens. If you really want smaller then look at the Sony RX100 instead of the RX10.

I'm a little surprised that CHG_CANON (Paul) hasn't chimed in yet, to tell you that a mirrorless Canon R-series is the only truly blessed and holy camera that you should consider taking on that trip!

I too will be in Israel in July and then am taking a river cruise in Europe. At 72, I do not lug my Fuji mirrorless camera and lenses on long trips. I just bought a Panasonic Lumix ZS200 point and shoot camera. It is 20MP, has a 1in sensor and a 24mm-360mm range Leica lens. It also is light and small. I have had several Lumix cameras and been happy with the results.

It should be a great trip! We went in February 2020 right before Covid lockdown. I decided to by a Canon M5 with 15-45mm lens (24-70 full frame equivalent). It is a super small and lightweight MILC. The current kit would be a EOS M50 Mark II EF-M 15-45mm for $600. Th rig worked perfect for me since there was no specialty photography involved. I did not want to carry a bunch of lenses and other gear. Since you use Nikon, Maybe the smallest Z crop sensor would work for you.
