Many people have a rider with their home insurance for camera equipment. State Farm, my carrier, offers such a policy. I gave them receipts and serial numbers for equipment to cover. Review this once a year, add new items as purchased and remove items from coverage with review. The price depends on your equipment and where you live but my cost for about 12 or 13k of equipment is less than 200 a year.

Do you mean for like adding a rider on a policy you already have or just getting one from a different company? I have Farmers insurance for other things and when I get a DSLR I think I will check there about adding on a rider policy to cover my equipment. If I don't like the price they have for it I will probably check around to places like State Farm, Travelers, Progressive, etc. I don't know for sure which of these companies might do such coverage so I would have to check around to see I am just thinking of the local insurance agents and which companies they are with that are in my town.

Thank you for all information. This topic is good for me because I did not know regular insurance can do with the camera. I thought just only the camera company or store/dealer I bought from. Now, I have thing to consideration.

Oh yeah, insurance companies can cover quite a few things actually. I worked for a couple of weeks doing cold calling for my Farmers agent (hes an old family friend) and he was telling me about all the things Farmers could cover one day; Farmers will acutally give you an insurance policy on kitchen appliances. He said there are some people who have a policy on things like blenders. That was new one for me.

I have an existing homeowners policy but policies are available for people who rent. I would just ask about a separate policy if I had neither homeowners or renters policy.

I can't speak for the States, but here in UK there are a number of Price Comparison web-sites (Go Compare, Money Supermarket, Confused.Com etc.) where you just dial in whatever your looking for and they'll search the web for a provider and give you a bunch of quotes.
I feel sure we're not that far ahead of you technologically. Lol

Don:
I have Metropolitan Home Owners Insurance, I added a rider on it to cover 10K worth of camera equipment, it cost me and additional $110/year. it covers loss, theft and damages. When purchasing the insurance, I provided receipts and a copy of the page off my equipment I have registered with Nikon. Fortunately I have not had to submit a claim and hop I never have to.

You can get the camera "rider" on a policy issued to a home (house) owner, a renter, a condo unit owner or someone who lives in a mobil home (mobil home - maybe). If you live in a motor home you can get a policy but you'll have to search and pay for it.

The advantage of a "rider" or policy is that the paper tells you what it will NOT pay for; the usual, unmodified home/renter/condo policy tell you what it WILL pay for.

Another trade-off is that he rider or policy usually states that it will pay the actual-cash-value of the item at the time you make a claim but no more than value you declare when bought the paper; the home/rent/condo will can pay the replacement cost - if you have purchased that coverage.

There is much more - talk to your agent. Every company does it differently. I am a retired independent (meaning I represented more than one company) insurance agent, my homeowners policy with the "rider" is with Travelers as is my separate policy.

How about sunglasses? If I lose another pair of polarized prescription sunglasses at $500 plus a pop I'm going to to cut off my eyelids and stake myself to the desert floor somewhere!

Now that's funny!! Take a piece of string and tie them around your neck.:):) Cheap fix.:) But i think on a rider they will cover pretty much anything you want. But you have to look at the big picture too. If you pay $100 a year, in 5 years you could have gotten another pair.

Most Household Contents insurance will cover your photographic equipment, but you'll have to tell them about it and they'll probably want anything valued at more than £1000 to be individually specified. You'll also need to ask for 'New for Old' if you want that cover.

You can add a theft rider to your car insurance company. I have Liberty mutual and they require a sales receipt along with the model and serial number. Some things, like my 50D, were bought used in a private sale so I don't have a receipt. They would not cover it because of that. I am going to check and see if I can cover it on my home owners.
