Good to hear you finally were able to update the firmware. A suggestion in the future is to make sure your mode dial is in "P", and you have removed the lens. That is what Canon's procedure states on their instructions for preparing the camera.

I usually have difficulties with firmware updates. So now I just call Canon and have a tech walk me through the process. For me it saves a lot of time and aggravation.

FWIW next time - I seem to remember it wanted a freshly formatted card with firmware file ONLY.
