thank you ken...i agree...wish i could have gotten a bit closer but it is what it is.
i have 3 different kinds of hibicus in big pots on my deck, and the only one those
hungry beetles munch on is the one in the picture.

Three suggestions:
1. Brush off as many as you can into a bowl of soapy water; repeat as needed
2. Spray insecticidal soap directly onto the bugs; repeat as needed; note this may also kill beneficial insects such as ladybugs
3. Spray a neem oil solution weekly, then monthly, using a hand-spray bottle; make a mixture of 4 cups water, then add ½ tsp dish soap as an emulsifier (to make the oil "dissolve" into the water), then add 1 tsp neem oil slowly, ¼ tsp at a time, mixing thoroughly; spray onto leaves, stems and soil

Talk your neighbors into putting up Japanese beetle traps. Then, the JB's will go to their properties instead of yours.

Good idea, dwu2... but our houses in this neighborhood are way far apart.

I've heard that small tactical nukes will take care of them! Just make sure to hold your breath for at least one and a half minutes after the split second of initiation, then you're good to go! I used to have Cherry Trees when I lived in Washington State. The little buggers were murder on them!
Beautiful photo BTW!

I was kidding, sort of. If you put out JB traps, you'll attract 2 beetles for every 1 you kill.
