Some films had A Look, as did some print papers. That pretty well masked The Look of any family of lenses.
Now we have The Look of a given sensor and camera processor, plus normal PP, all of which also tend to mask The Look of a breed of lenses.
Ive checked on this, cuz such belief is so pervasive. I have a plethora of different lenses with redundant specs ... old 1950s and 1970s lenses, German and Japanese. And acoarst I have many modern lenses.
Its a verrry rare instance that I can even halfway convince myself that a particular lens is contributing, very slightly, its own "unique look". IOW I have attempted to believe, but cannot really believe.
Seems to me that these beliefs by others only shows that "
faith is the evidence of things not seen" [Hebrews 11:1]. But in photography all that we can ever have is what actually *CAN* be seen.

Yes there is a Zeiss look, partly because of their excellent micro-contrast and pop. But now there are excellent and less expensive lenses that also have excellent micro-contrast and that pop. As optical designs have advanced, those characteristics are no longer exclusive to Zeiss lenses anymore. Just a fact.
Use what you love and be happy.
Cheers and best to you.
Yep, You are right Gerald... My Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART is coming soon... Reasonable price and great optics.
Just came back from Wal Mart where my elderly mom got some new glasses from the Vision center there. The lenses were all Zeiss and Nikon made lenses.
Zeiss is going to be just fine, no worries.
Cheers and best to you.

Zeis lenses for Hasselblad were all outstanding.

Great Expectations.
I enjoy many Sigmas but Id never praise a lens that I havent even unpacked yet.

I used them daily. They are just lenses. When I switched to Zenzanons there was no loss, even with chromes. OTOH, the camera was more reliable and ergonomic.

Pretty hard to demo something now days... All you can do is research and read reviews etc... I would not buy it if I thought all my research was in vain ! I need a lens in that focal length to fill a niche in my kit. The only Sigma that I currently own is fixed on my Sigma Merrill DP2. Judging by the job Sigma did on that and the reviews and samples I researched on the 35, I am reasonably sure I will be more than satisfied. " Great optics " was in reference to Sigma products in general BTW, Especially at their price point. No, we won't go to 20 pages; after careful deliberation the judges have decided the the I's take this round.

Zeiss makes great lenses...but is having difficulty in the market...because everyone is making great glass.
Zeiss has made the business decision not to try and compete in a shrinking market...with less and less profits...and increased competition.
Does Zeiss have a look? I suppose. Folks can spot a Zeiss sometimes...Leica has the same meme.
It could also just be knowing what to look for...the average viewer won't even think along those lines.
Video...video is where Zeiss can grow...lens competition is much lower and the price tag is where they want to be.
I expect they will come out with a very expensive line...
Trying to keep their brand name as elite as possible.
They can't do that in the stills market...they know it.
Love my Sigma Art lenses, and I dont have to try them out personally before I buy one.
First of all I know their quality, and secondly I have many pro friends who are some of the first testers of new Sigma lenses, and I trust their reviews and real-world experiences using them, no worries.
Cheers and best to you.
Fun fact...
Zeiss doesn't make lenses for micro...said they do not consider it to be a professional format.
Ouch...
