He carried out a similar conversion as he had on the AC Cobra, but there was nothing shared between the two automakers. It started with a 260 and then progressed to a 289.

Yes, that is the story I heard. Jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock is the original owner of an early white 260 Cobra. Upon riding in it Miles Davis said, it's evil get rid of it. Miles liked Ferraris.
