That's correct. And illegal to use in a vehicle driving on the roads. Like 'reefer' diesel, fuel for the refrigerated trailers hauling tv dinners. No fuel tax on it so as much as 83 cents a gallon cheaper depending on where purchased. But illegal to add to the tractor fuel tanks while pulling tv dinners.

A diesel engine will run on heating oil which is usually cheaper. But heating oil has a dye added to it so if you put it in your tank it can be easily detected.

My pickup holds 36 gallons, so I always plan on topping off when I'm near inexpensive gas. I use the GasBuddy app to know where along my route I should stop, and I never just wait until I'm getting low. I'll top off at 3/4 of a tank sometimes.

Gas in this small town today is $4.66 for regular unleaded, but I topped off yesterday for $3.71 in a town just over 100 miles away. I was there anyway for something else. It's nice having a large tank that holds more than 600 highway-miles worth of gas. I usually have enough to last until I go out of town again and almost never buy rip-off gas near home. Now, if my next travels just take me 100 miles west instead of north, gas there is a mere $3.40...

Gas costs me around $0.07/mile or less so at 50-60 mpg and my tank only holds 10 gallons so I don't worry much about the gas price. Having said that, we came across a gas station last week that was charging about $1.00/gallon more than everyone else in the area. They were not busy. Nor did I make them any busier.

Aren't diesel for vehicles and heating oil both kerosene?
One has road taxes paid on it (diesel), the other does not (heating oil).

They are all hydrocarbons. The difference is the number of carbon atoms in the chain. Kerosene is pretty thin, more like gasoline. Diesel has more carbon atoms and is more oily. Heating oil is very similar to diesel but has a few more carbon atoms in the chain.

I haven't used kerosene in a long time. My recollection is that it's a bit more oily than gasoline but less oily than diesel or heating oil. We used to use it as a penetrating oil before WD40 became popular. The vapor pressure goes up as the number of carbon atoms goes down. So gasoline and kerosene will evaporate fairly quickly but diesel and heating oil will take longer.

A lot of farms that use greenhouses will use heating oil to heat the greenhouses and to run their tractors. Since the tractors don't travel on the roads they don't have to have fuel that is subject to the road use tax. (Of course they cross roads or go short distances on roads occasionally to get between fields but that is winked at in agricultural towns).

Ahhh, Thanks.
Also found that kerosene has a lower boiling point than diesel.
Close. While an diesel engine may run kerosene in a pinch (less lubricating capabilities), one probably would not want to run diesel in a kerosene heater.

Buy a Tesla or other EV and if your electric rate is reasonable- it's "almost free". I fill up in (northern IL) for about $6, for approximately 300 miles of range. BTW the Model 3 now sells for less than the average car sold in the US. Also no more driving to gas stations. Food for thought, if you're not into EVs that's OK too.

Wait till it’s time to replace the battery(s).

I buy nearly all my groceries at Kroger, and I have a 'method' that I follow to maximize the bonus fuel points that I earn, and I use a Kroger branded Visa card. By following my 'method' I routinely save $1.55 per gallon at the Kroger fuel pumps. I drive a Ford C-Max hybrid, don't really drive all that much & generally buy 2 tanks of gas per month. I also use the GasBuddy phone app to help me find bargain gas when I do travel.

You save 1.55 per gallon?

I only use Top Tier in my Toyota Highlander. I buy it at Costco.

Gas prices here in NC are all over the place. We live five miles from a major pipeline's distribution center. Right now, gas can cost anywhere from $3.10 to $3.60 for 87-octane unleaded regular with 10% ethanol. Most of the stations near me stay in the lower end of that range, $3.19 to $3.29.

I don't really care, because I drive a 13-year-old Prius. The high voltage battery is old and tired, and will need replacement soon, but the car still gets around 38 MPG. It got about 44 when new.

I bought my first Prius in 2008, when gas was around $4.65 a gallon in Charlotte. That's equivalent to about $6.56/gallon now, if you adjust for inflation.

So... If I need gas, I fill it up, and laugh at all the folks in the big SUVs who b*tch and moan about needing 20 gallons of gas to my 8.

I don't care about gas prices. I enjoy automobiles and driving. The difference between ten and twenty miles per gallon is not worth the pleasure of driving what I enjoy. Years ago I used to play the mileage game. Then I realized my enjoyment was worth more than twenty bucks a week.

Jerry: I live in Eastern Washington now. AZ in the winter, I am in WA now. If I drive to the closest WA. Flying J to fill up it is 10 miles and costs $4.599 a gallon. If I drive 4 miles to the Flying J in Idaho it cost 3.499 a gallon. Guess where I go. Also my Hybrid gets 45 miles to the gallon.
