Pay More for Gas

I buy nearly all my groceries at Kroger, and I have a 'method' that I follow to maximize the bonus fuel points that I earn, and I use a Kroger branded Visa card. By following my 'method' I routinely save $1.55 per gallon at the Kroger fuel pumps. I drive a Ford C-Max hybrid, don't really drive all that much & generally buy 2 tanks of gas per month. I also use the GasBuddy phone app to help me find bargain gas when I do travel.

Yea, I suppose saving $3.00 a month is better than $0 a month.

Typically I get gas every 1-2+ months for one car. Save a long trip.
I just get gas.

Buy a Tesla or other EV and if your electric rate is reasonable- it's "almost free". I fill up in (northern IL) for about $6, for approximately 300 miles of range. BTW the Model 3 now sells for less than the average car sold in the US. Also no more driving to gas stations. Food for thought, if you're not into EVs that's OK too.

You can often pay more per gallon and save money on gas. I watched a YouTube video about that the other day. Is it worth driving a few extra miles to buy cheaper gas? It depends. When I need gas, I have to decide if it's cheaper driving into town for less expensive gas or buying locally. It costs me about $0.08/mile for gas. I figure the price difference and how many gallons I think I'll need, and I get the answer. I can easily justify paying more per gallon by not driving thirty-four miles for cheaper gas. I also save about an hour, too. Of course, if I'm going into town, anyway, then it's irrelevant.
You can often pay more per gallon and save money o... (show quote)

It doesn't cost you $0.08/mile to drive to get 'cheaper' gas though. There's the distance to there, the extra distance from there to home or wherever you were going, wear and tear on engine/transmission and all other moving parts, tire wear, brake wear and other factors. So the fuel cost to go for 'cheaper' gas may be $0.08/mile but the true cost may be a quarter a mile or who knows.

It's not $3 a month. It's $1.55 per gallon. Two fillups per month. So if a fill is 10 gallons that's $15.50 saved twice a month, $31 total not $3.

Thank you for clarifying my point. I was quite speechless when I read '$3 a month.'

Dear Jerry,

Everyone does what he/she does. I still like my SUV & if there is an accident hopefully my bigger car will help.

I thought that 'farm gas" was gas without the 'road taxes' added to the price since the vehicles were used on the farm and not the road.

That's correct. And illegal to use in a vehicle driving on the roads. Like 'reefer' diesel, fuel for the refrigerated trailers hauling tv dinners. No fuel tax on it so as much as 83 cents a gallon cheaper depending on where purchased. But illegal to add to the tractor fuel tanks while pulling tv dinners.

Yes, I'd forgotten that part. I learned it in a generic orientation but never pulled reefer so never used it. They told stories of some who tried to cheat and use it. Didn't turn out well.

In the past, the car dealership would ask me how many miles were on the car when I would trade it in. Now they want to know how much fuel is left in the tank.
