"The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s leading oil producer by about 2017 and will become a net oil exporter by 2030, the International Energy Agency said Monday. There are several components of the sudden shift in the world’s energy supply, but the prime mover is a resurgence of oil and gas production in the United States.

The International Energy Agency said the United States would be a net exporter of oil by 2030. That increased oil production, combined with new American policies to improve energy efficiency, means that the United States will become “all but self-sufficient” in meeting its energy needs in about two decades — a “dramatic reversal of the trend” in most developed countries, a new report released by the agency says.

“The foundations of the global energy systems are shifting,” Fatih Birol, chief economist at the Paris-based organization, which produces the annual World Energy Outlook, said in an interview before the release. The agency, which advises industrialized nations on energy issues, had previously predicted that Saudi Arabia would be the leading producer until 2035."

I don't know about nationalizing the oil companies... but I'd settle for stopping their massive subsidies.

MLJ.... You said “Sorry to be so long-winded. “ No, you are articulate and sharing not long winded. While as you say, not rich, you have just via UHH promoted yourself as an Eco-friendly person.

You mentioned Solyndra’s demise as an ill placed investment. New technology like Solyndra are at times victims of the sudden changed market force and fail not based on the technology, but because of sudden changes of economics. In the case of Solyndra competitive silicone solar based technology won out; economics. Silicone prices plummeted and we were swimming in low cost natural gas. Brazil has energy independence based on ethanol. We use corn to produce alcohol at this time, but alternate routes using cellulose, weeds, trash-wood, stubble and even trash are being very actively researched. Wired Magazine gave a survey article worth reading: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2012/01/ff_solyndra/3/

“The US could do a much better job of promoting our "democratic republic" to other countries” by a quiet productive example for others to emulate rather than being force fed. "Reagan" idealist,,, humm I’ll ponder that one. Did we with Russia bring down Nazis or did they do it themselves by foolish action non-characteristic of Germans. Fanaticism, even good intentioned like the Teaparty can destroy a country and persuade 50% of the country to march in lock step with a chant, frightening to me a born in 36 and growing up during WW2.

IMO both the Nazis and the “Communist Russia” were one and the same examples of countries cruelly dictated to by psychopathic. I do not consider Russian as communistic or socialistic, but rather as being an iron handed slave camp. Regan was accused of being a communist by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy Reagan quickly turned on other actors and professed and became to be a anticommunist extremist. So perhaps the “Reagan idealism” you profess is an allegiance to the Myth of Reagan. I lived thru the Ronny years when unions were called evil and were “busted” and have never regained. Individuals divided have no bargaining rights, but united as in a Union the have power. Give a read to: http://prorev.com/reagan.htm

“US proved to the Soviets that socialism was a terrible idea” Socialism is a successful contract between people administered one to one, by churches, by clubs, by government. Our interstate highway system is an example as is CDC. Too often to be politically correct Socialism is government owns all. If we need semantics, then call our socialism “ Mild Socialism”. Simply stated, socialism is our monies invested for the common good. In a discussion of the TeaParty the vague definition of socialism is defined by reality:

“Never mind that roads, interstate highways, police departments, fire fighters, public education, medicare, social security, government funded primary research, medical research, NASA, and national defense is socialism. Government is a decent model for us to do together what we cannot separately.” Too often we being human follow the grunt of nameism, pigeon holing, where words, regardless of length or reality, are reduced to 4 letter words. People follow easy chants like natives in a cheap movie.
Over the past 10 years I have seen wars that "should not have been," and policies by the government that suggest "nationalization." I have seen policies that suggest redistribution of wealth. I doubt the merits of either. The wealth was redistributed to the people who profit from war… monies in the Treasury were too tempting for the Republican power structure. Redistribution of the peoples monies to the already rich.

You said “My boss ( I am a State employee) makes a lot more money than do I. I have received a 1.2% pay raise over the past four years. My insurance deductibles have increased. I actually make less money than I did four years ago.” Do I deserve more money?...absolutely!
Surly would be great to have the backing of a strong union, right?

Seems we all agree: “We NEED to become energy independent...or we will really suffer the consequences. Now this is long winded!!!
