There are more different reasons to feel a need to update or upgrade than there are different camera choices available. Sonetimes there's just a desire to have sonething new, and that can be valid, as well.
As has been mentioned, the D7200 is a pretty capable camera. But it's been around for a while, abd you haven't heard yet from the crowd that will talk about the advantages of the latest sensir technology. And there are situations in which a full frame camera can offer some advantages over a crop frame camera, but you will need full-frame lenses to realize those benefits. Do you have those already? I am v f ry sensitive to the camera's layout and control system. Has that become a problem for you?
You've just missed some really beneficial sales from Nikon for both the Z6 and Z6ii. They could both be good choices to begin assembling a new system. With Nikon's new support policies, I'd suggest going with the most recent model that I could fit into the budget. But I'd also consider other options. There might be DSLR choices that could satify your needs. If the control interface is what you want to address, the Z9 is the only Nikon mirrorless that offers a meaningful difference right now. Could a D500 be an alternative choice?
I'm not going to try to tell you what to buy. I am going to encourage you to think about what you want to be different. Make your choice based on that, not on what I might say or what anyone else might say.
If simply going mirrorless is your goal, the Z50 will provide many of the benefits while still allowing you to use your DX lenses (with adapter, of course).
All this advice starts me thinking: Is it time to consider replacing my D300 or D610? Then, I think why?

If you primarily shoot food photos and are committed to a new camera system (body + lenses) I would consider a Z7II for the higher resolution. Or a Sony A7IV. Then again, the reolution of a Fuji GX50 would also do the trick. Have much $$ would you like to spend?

From what I've read, the Z6 II is a big step up from the Z6. I have the II, and it's very nice. I tend to pick up my D750, though because I've been using it for so long.
Before you spend your money, read online reviews and comparisons.
Jerry: Reading about something on the web is like throwing darts. Actual experience is worth far more. I own, and regularly use, two Z6 bodies and I find them more than adequate for the work that I perform with them. Personally, the Z6 II offers me nothing I need at this point. I will look into the features of the Z8 once the final and official specs are released. Best of luck.

The Z6 & Z6ii are full frame cameras - your D7200 is crop sensor so you will need to buy new lenses. The Z50 is the Nikon crop sensor camera which will use your D7200 lenses with the FTZ adaptor.
I keep wanting a new camera body and have a EOS R but can't find a reason to buy one at this point.
All of my lenses are DX. If going with a z-50 and adapter would allow me to go shutterless, and not have to buy all new lenses, what advantages would there be in image quality, etc.,
if I went this route?

Go the "Z" route, and get the F2Z adapter. For Photoshop (and Lightroom),

Thanks for your comment. I'm a long time D750 user and I sometimes covet the advances in a Z6II like AF eye tracking, more focus points - edge to edge maybe? - and better high ISO performance. Probably other goodies I just don't know about yet. The thing is that 10 year old D750 keeps on performing at a high level long beyond expectations. If Nikon knew how I've abused their camera they'd probably build a marketing campaign around how durable Nikons are. I shake my head when I think about it. But even when I think, OK, that's finally it. It isn't and the camera keeps producing great photos.
So yeah, I want more advanced AF, but eventually they'll replace the Z6II with something more advanced and the way things look, the D750 isn't planning on retiring yet. :)

Depends what you have and what you shoot. The Z50 will give you the immense benefit of being able to see your shot in the viewfinder before you take the picture, so you may get more keepers right away. It is smaller than most DX cameras, and maybe easier to handle. Many find the "i" menu system a good way to work. The resolution or IQ will not be very different, so it is the little ease of use things that may make the camera a better tool for you.
BUT, if you have a D500 and shoot birds in flight, the Z50 is not an upgrade. From frame rate to AF to blacked out viewfinder, the Z50 is NOT a substitute for a D500. It is possible to use it for wildlife, but it is not as satisfactory as a semi-pro body like the D500.
