How is it possible that my new iPhone 14 Max Pro can have a 45 Megapixel sensor? All my Sony cameras top out at 24 megapixels? I realize that More is Better but don’t understand how they can have that many megapixels on such a small sensor!

Megapixels have always been a marketing ploy. Only pixel peepers are really or should be concerned about them. Most people view images on a computer/phone screen or from a few feet away at a gallery show. Unless you're printing above A3 size images you don't need anything over 16mp. JMHO
And they can have that many megapixels on the small sensor cause they're packed closer together.

Samsung marketing would disagree with you.

A great lens can turn 5 megapixels into art. 45 megapixels can't do the same for a mediocre lens.

Or a mediocre photograph.

The size of the pixels are more important than the amount and you don't need anymore than 24 megapixels unless you print large prints.

The greatest things in digital photography are the pixels.

For my work, it does matter how many pixels I want and need. On my high resolution screens the difference is apparent. I have owned Sony 24mp A7III and 24mp A9, and also 50mp A1, and 61mp A7RIV and using my same top resolving lenses, there is a very noticeable difference in ultimate image resolution and detail in my images with my 50mp A1, and 61mp A7RIV vs similar images taken with my 24mp A7III and 24mp A9. Just physics.

It may not matter to some, but for me and my clients it does matter. As much as I loved and used my 24mp fullframe cameras to make great shots, I love the image quality, greater resolution and greater detail of my shots even more with my fullframe 50mp and 61mp cameras. And not talking about big blowups. And I need more than 24mp to shoot 8K video with my cameras, an important ability.

Cheers and best to you.

Everything goes back to the early days of digital where everything was based on pixel numbers. A lot of people are still convinced that the more pixels you have, the clearer, sharper, and better picture you will get. Great marketing

Pixobo: " Do two cameras with the same number of megapixels have the same quality of the photo? No, because sensor size is more relevant when it comes to picture quality. If you have a smartphone with a small sensor, it just can’t produce the same quality as the camera with a bigger sensor. Sensors are there to collect the light and that way every pixel is physically larger than in a smartphone with a small sensor. In addition to the size of the sensor, there are other factors that also have a great affect on the quality of the photos, photosite area, size and the quality of the camera lens and the image processor. "

When comparing cameras with the SAME size pixels and same size sensor, simply said, more megapixel represents a higher possible resolution of the photo. That results in a photo with more details.

Cheers and best to you all.

If we gave two people a digital camera and lens, and after a week we learned one camera has twice as many pixels at the other, who do you think was the better photographer?

The 45 mega pixel setting isn’t on by default. It’s only available using the 1x magnification setting. Any other magnification setting will be 12mp at most. To use the 45 mp follow the steps in the attached image. But beware, you’ll eat up your available storage quickly.

The whole point of owning a camera with the most megapixels is that you don’t have to explain things with words.
