Last week we had a couple of days in which there was no snow or rain. This set was taken on an overcast day to determine how well the 100 - 400mm lens worked hand held without any tc. I am renting the new Sony 70 - 200 at the end of the month and I wanted some comparisons.

Our local lake had no migratory visitors on this day, so the set is our residents enjoying a little break from our constant winter.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Great set Mike! I love the water around these residents!! I don't see any challenges with this lens, hand held for you, all are nice and sharp!
I like your idea of renting a lens. I may be doing the same before diving into something with more reach for my rig.

Thanks, Rob. I am looking at cutting down on the weight of my birding rig.

Nice pictures, Mike. I like the coloring on the ducks! I've wondered before - how do birds negotiate the bushes with all the thorns? And what is the lavender patch on the duck in the first picture. It doesn't look like a natural color.

Thanks, Loren. I am not a birder, but these patches, in varying darkness, appear on several of our resident ducks. The bushes are not as dense as that angle makes them appear.

Interesting that it's a near perfect rectangle.

Thanks, Barbara. I know that it is sharp, I just wanted to see how it worked without a tc and hand holding.

Strikingly beautiful images.

(I appreciate your comment about the weight. I typically shoot with the Nikkor 200-500. After a 10-day trip, my shoulder is sore for a month)

Thanks, Fred. As I get older, I try to work smarter.

Great set, Mike. I really like the sparrow images. Looks like we are in for flooding rains down here so I'll be shut in for a few days.
