I have a D500 and I think it is inherently noisy. Topaz Denoise does a great job of reducing or eliminating the noise.

I have a D500 and shoot a lot of birds in low light. I am happy with the results I get in LRC. In "noise reduction" I turn up the luminance to around 40 and the detail to around 70.

It would help to know what type of action you're photographing and where it's taking place. Is it all in the far away stage area or is it anywhere in the floor area? If it's all close to where the stage curtain is you could easily use a lower f-stop, especially since the D500 is a crop sensor camera. Plus if you're focusing on individuals you don't need a lot of DOF.

Are you trying to capture constant movement or is it intermittent? If the latter you could use continuous shutter release with a slower shutter speed and try to time your shots to coincide with the subjects not moving or moving slowly. Continuous shutter release will increase your chances of capturing the subjects when they're stationary or moving slowly.

Good morning, All,

Issue: Correct the amount of ‘NOISE’ using a D500 with a Nikon Zoom 28 – 107mm lens.
Would like to hear from the group what experience they may suggest reducing the amount of noise that appears in D500 photos. Yes, I understand lighter would be helpful, but I do not often have that luxury. I normally shoot with a shutter speed of 320 having an aperture of F8 or F11. Though this setting gives me a sharp picture most of the time, there is still quite a bit of noise as well as spots that appear for unknown reasons. I’ve attached a couple of ‘RAW’ files to give you an example of the issue I am talking about. FYI – I usually use Lightroom or ‘ON1 Photo Raw 2023’ in post editing but the attached pictures have not been modified.

Thanks for your suggestion in advance.

According to the EXIF data for photo 1, this was shot at 1/60s, f/10, ISO 22800, 18mm using an 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 lens, in aperture priority.

My first observation is that you don't need an aperture of f/10. You could easily use an aperture of f/4 or f/5.6 for these shots; at f/5.6 you could reduce ISO to 6400.

If you are steady, you could shoot this at 1/30s as well, further reducing ISO to 3200. This is getting into the acceptable range of ISO for the D500, at least in good light (which this is not).

Of course, the obvious solution is to get the D500 onto a good tripod. Because then you can lower the shutter speed until ISO is in the 100-800 range and your noise would be easily corrected. That would be in the range of 1s - 1/8s.

If you want to reduce noise, you need more light, and that means a slower shutter speed and a larger aperture.

My recommendation: use a tripod at 1s, f/5.6, ISO100

In its early days, my Pentax KP was often compared to the Nikon D500. I have to use ISO values well over 10K before I notice noise in JPG files. I don’t know at what ISO values you are operating, but these values seem low to me.
