I went from the D850 to the Z9 only for the the reason of speed and quiet shutter and human and animal eye detection which works wonderful on this camera. I point the camera at the subject whether dog cat bird squirrels and it grabs the focus on the eye instantly. Amazes me still.

I have a D500 and a Z6 - original. The D500 is for wildlife, predominantly birds. The Z6 is my general go-to camera. That combination works well for me. A Z6II would be nicer, but not enough for me to upgrade.
For you..... Does buying a new camera keep you from eating? Paying the rent / mortgage? Delaying retirement?
It's good to have choices.
It's all a matter of priorities.
YMMV

...love mine. A bit of a learning curve with the focus system, but with a couple of firmware updates (which are a HUGE bonus...hoooray for Nikon) and some practice, I've had absolutely no problems. Now, I don't use it for birdie shots as I have a Z9 for that, but for virtually *anything* else, the Z6II is golden.

I own a bunch of Nikon equipment and have no problems to report that would keep me from buying more, so I agree that most name brand cameras are going to give you good service. That said, it all depends on your wants and needs as to which camera you buy. I'm thinking about a full frame body having dipped my toe with a Z50 and find that I like it. So my major observation is this... The Z5 is half the price with very similar specs. The Z5 has two SD card slots which I like instead of one big and one little since I don't care a lot about video. The other point that has me thinking maybe spending extra money on the Z7ii is the transition using all my old lenses, some of which are DX which will drop either the Z5 or the Z6ii to only ten megapixels while the Z7ii is still a healthy 20 megapixels even in DX mode. I can't give you any first hand user advice, but the Z5 gets some real positive reviews and is half the price, so I know which way I'm leaning since I'm a miser. Good luck!

You really need to go by more than basic specs to compare the cameras. The Z5 is a nice and capable camera but the Z6II has a BSI sensor that increases high ISO performance and 2 stops more sensitivity for AF. The dual processors give much faster AF response and it also triples the frame rate over the Z5. And it has face detection which the Z5 lacks. If those differences aren’t important go for a Z5, but the Z6II is a big upgrade.

Hard to say what is worthwhile to you without knowing what you expect.

I do own the original Z6 and it does what I expect it to do. The improvements that come with version II may be worth it to you.

That said, I still use my DSLR's more than any of my mirrorless cameras. Being old may br the reason it takes longer to accept change.

Yep, those features are great and if you're in a position to pay twice the price, I would agree. That's why I mentioned thinking seriously about the Z7ii because having the full 20 megapixels in DX mode would be as important to me as the other buffs of the Z6ii. The OP will have to apply his wants and needs to that decision. I'd guess that any of the three would put a smile on your face if a full frame is what you're looking for assuming you can live with the trade-offs. It all comes down to cost/benefit. I think Ron produces some great shots with what he has now, so there's that option as well. GAS is merciless.

I have one but seem to be using the z7ii more than the z6ii. Unless you need the extra one or two fps the 6 has, the 7 offers more advantages like being able to crop in to a greater extent. I wish the 6 had been a crop-sensor model and it would have been a perfect replacement for the D500. As is, the z50 does not equal the D500 and as of now, Nikon has not made a z replacement for the D500. That being said, the 6ii is a great camera in itself, just not as usable for me.
