I bought 2 of these from Calfornia to be shipped to me in Texas and the shipping charge was $20. The same price as the batteries.

Yup, and most of the online sites don't show you the S&H cost until you've input all of your information and are ready to hit the BUY button. Recently I just close the screen when I see the ridiculous S&H cost.

I closed the screen like 3 times before I decided I can't get a better price overall somewhere else.

One thing I really appreciate is free shipping. Even if I need a minimum purchase amount, I can usually find things to add to my cart to get free shipping.

What I don't like is ridiculously high shipping charges. It's one thing to make money on the product, but making a profit on the shipping cost is cheating. If I return an item, I get a refund for the product, but not for the high shipping cost - which the seller didn't pay. There was a ukulele on eBay for $180, with a shipping charge of over $83. I see many small, lightweight items with oddly high shipping charges. I've put items into my cart, only to empty it when I see the shipping charge.

Yes, I know there is expense involved in the package, label, printing, postage, and workforce, but I shop by price, and shipping is part of the price.

I know what you mean I bought a new fork for my bicycle and then I needed to buy an adapter for it so that I could hook up the router so the disc brake could work I found the part online for $15.95 and then shipping was like almost $10.00.

Sometimes that shipping charge includes insurance for when the items is lost or damaged during shipment. I used to sell items on eBay and offer free shipping. That is until several expensive pieces were lost during shipment and I took a big hit and no chance of recovery.

After that you just include the price of shipping, insurance etc in the price and then advertise “free shipping”. This is now the common practice with companies offering “free shipping”.

The main reason I don't buy anything from the USA. By the time you pay the regular shipping and handling then add in the brokerage fees it is far better to 'Buy China' with free shipping to my door. Also I get three day delivery from China and about two week delivery from the USA, and quite often a better price on the same item from China.

Yes, I've heard that from YouTubers in other countries.

In the USA, I think the breaking point is $800. If something costs that much, we pay an import fee.

I'm not talking import fees, they're on top of brokerage fees which apply to anything coming across the border and are normally a minimum of $25 and/or a percentage of deemed value.

Right. I watch a couple of Canadians on YouTube who sometimes by from the US, and they mention the extra cost. here, we pay an import duty, maybe 10%, on anything over $800. At least, that my understanding.

It's true that the seller pays eBay fees on the sale price, not on the shipping price, so some sellers add part of the item's price to the shipping price so they don't have to pay Ebay so much. Doesn't seem as nice for the customer but better for the seller.

We were in Port Washington, Long Island the other day. We stopped into a music store while waiting. Saw a bunch of musical instruments for sale. Clarinets, oboes, bassoons, flutes, guitars were on display. The prices were high. They had ukuleles as well. They were priced reasonable based upon the painting motif.

So basically I can do a buy it now for $0 and shipping charge $1000 to sell a $1000 item?

I don’t buy an item with a LAAARGE shipping Charge. For example, I could see a lapel pin for $9.99. But it the shipping charge is $20, it will sit on my wish folder until the object’s shipping charge drops to down to $3. Shipping and handling should be 33% of the original cost.

Should be really less than that. $33% is too much. So I wish I can buy stuff locally and yes I did pay $20 shipping for $20 item.
My company did pay over $1000 shipping for $40 item.

There is tremendous variation in musical instrument prices. Ukuleles can sell from $20 or $4,000, and anything in between.

I lived on the south shore in Nassau county.
